    The North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high class victorian architecture. The streets are paved with stone, the buildings are made of brick, and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting. In the North every establishment is made to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - weather it be illegal or merely looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allow them the luxuries that the North provides.

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

The alcohol provides a false sense of warmth that splinters throughout his body. He revels in the burning sensation that lingers in his throat and gut as the scotch makes it way from its chilled glass and courses through his insides. The drink is beginning to have its desired effect, and Dareios slumps into his bar stool as he slowly starts to relax. He knows that his usual cronies are still hovering outside. He is still the mayor, after all, and these days he could barely go anywhere without a team of bodyguards following in his footsteps. Perhaps it was best that they were here after all. It meant he always had a designated driver to get him home before sunrise, and a team of people who would shield him from the onslaught of bad press on the nights like this when he chose to make a poor decision, or two.

His publicist would be having a heart attack right now if she knew he was openly drinking in a dirty dive bar alone and in the middle of the night. She would be even more alarmed if she had watched how quickly he had consumed the first drink and then ordered another. But his publicist wasn't here right now. Nor was his board of commissioners. The paperwork he had stacked high on his desk would still be waiting for him when he got home. And didn't he deserve a break once in a while? Even if his actions tonight were hardly characteristic of him in any which way.

Despite the fact that Dareios was well on his way to being impaired, he could sense the paranoia the young vampire sitting next him was feeling. Perhaps it was his curiosity that drove him to speak to her. Or perhaps like her, he could use a friendly distraction. Dareios flashes her a short-lived, but genuine smile when she responds to his generic quip and nods his head slowly. He listens with interest as she orders a glass of white wine. He never had much of a palate for the tart taste of white wine. But he was impressed. He so rarely met another of his kind that drank alcohol to enjoy it. It was an acquired taste for any species. But for a vampire, it required more self perseverance to appreciate the earthly taste of a fermented drink that their stomachs were not accustomed to digesting anymore.

"So why white over red?" He asks casually, watching as the bartender carefully poured her drink. "I've always appreciated the fuller tones of a Pinot Nior over a Pinot Grigio."

There was something exciting about their casual conversation. Perhaps it was because this woman didn't seem to recognize him. Or even better, if she did, she didn't care who he was. It was funny to him how much he missed that.
