    The North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high class victorian architecture. The streets are paved with stone, the buildings are made of brick, and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting. In the North every establishment is made to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - weather it be illegal or merely looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allow them the luxuries that the North provides.

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

It had been so long since Dareios had been peculiar enough about a person to want to date them. This was strange on many fronts. The first being that Dareios, by nature, was a social creature. He was incredibly loyal to the allies in his keep, and was naturally quite good at making friends. It was in some ways, a bit of a sport for him. It was an unquenchable curiosity. After the hundreds of years he'd spent on this earth, it was perhaps the one thing that he seemingly could not predict. People were so vastly different from one another. While traits and tastes can be similar sometimes, history and culture and connection were wildly individual. Dareios found how it all mixed together to be fascinating.

Nevertheless, the vampire was rather adept at walling himself off to others. He was polite and charming, so it was easy to play the part of a good listener and divert these friends from asking too many questions about himself. He had loved before. But that was a long time ago. The experience was too, well, intense and messy, and had some lingering consequences that still kept Dareios up at night (so to speak). So he never sought out that kind of deep, emotional connection again. Despite his hard-in-place discipline over his more predatory instincts, Dareios, too, could not trust himself without a doubt that he wouldn't hurt someone else again one day. He had hurt many, and for many years, before he was able to refine himself to the version most see today. It was a constant struggle, one he would forever be embattled with. Be it human or fae or whatever else, there was always risk, especially when both sides of the equation let their guards down.

But walking home this human girl, Miya, seemed hardly a risk at all. Dareios would be lying to himself if he said he didn't think she was pretty, and charming, in her own sort of way. He dug his cold, undead palms into the pockets of his heavy peacoat and studied her from a distance on the sidewalk. He noticed how she started to relax some now that they weren't confined to that stuffy cafe. He too, relaxed his posture a bit, now that the government hearse was no longer in sight. She asks him a question he's heard many times before, but he smiles anyway. "I'd like to say you get used to it, but you don't," He says casually. "But I guess you learn how to manage it. When you must be 'on' and when you can let yourself be 'off'." The vampire was talking through a stream consciousness, he realizes. Perhaps he is more dazed from the day's long agenda than he realized. "I hope that makes sense." He interjects at the last minute.

"Oh, and I'm from a small town outside Dublin." He spits out, only realizing now that he never answered her question back inside the cafe. He lets his gaze momentarily bounce across the street. A few bodies hurry under the streetlights toward the train station a few blocks away. Cars pass by almost on cue. "Where are you from, Miya?"

"By the way, Miyako is a beautiful name. Who cares if most people can't pronounce it."

Several minutes have passed since they'd abandoned the cafe for the streets of Sacrosanct, but here they still stood, frozen a few feet from one another, still talking. He waited patiently for Miya's response, hoping that she would allow him to tag along on her walk home. When she extends the opportunity, he cracks a bit of a half-smile. "Lucky for you, I don't mind a long, late night stroll." He says, taking a few steps forward now as they move away from the cafe, and offering the girl his arm, if she felt inclined to take it. Some old habits die hard. Dareios was well known for being a bit old fashioned. "And besides, I believe it's my duty as mayor to personally inspect this block of ill-equipped street lights."
