Arlo James

See what it's like to be a vulture's lunch

He could hardly help those almost curious thoughts that danced about within his mind just then. After all, how often did a Panda climb down onto a keyboard only type? More than that, his little pet seemed to actually possess an ability to spell. Was this some talent of witch’s familiars? Wasn’t that what Sebastian said she might be? Either that, or she wasn’t a panda at all and yet if she wants a panda then what could possibly keep her from shifting back into her human skin? Bloody hell this was going to be awkward if she was. He’d put her down his shirt at least ten times. Arlo momentarily considering that realistically that was hardly his most flirtatious move and not normally a path he took with most women. Surely she was just magic or something right? Surely? That doubt tugging at his mind and yet for now at least he made some further effort to dispel it even as his Little Bear seemed to display an awfully large amount of knowledge on spelling, grammar and an ability to work a computer for an animal. That almost dubious look he so provided his companion was short lived, the man far more taken then with what was actually written on the screen and their efforts to undo Patrick’s ridiculous compilation of junk in a box.

Arlo’s blue gaze roved over that screen then, searching for that link Little Bear seemed to be gesturing too, the vampire frowning slightly at those stories about Chinese mines. Bloody typical thing of Patrick to do. Leave him some sort of mine that required actual work for him to look after or run or what not. Maybe this was one of those ridiculous beyond the grave life lessons he was trying to teach- even if Patrick had hardly been the type to be this….weird about it. Hell, normally the man had just up and said whatever it was he wanted Arlo to know or do or understand. Subtlety hadn’t exactly been the man’s strong suite and yet the fact he’d been left anything at all, he supposed, was surprising in itself. Maybe he hadn’t known that man nearly as well as he thought, even despite how long they lived together. One hand lifted to run back through his hair in that moment of consideration before his little pet ducked down to let him see the screen properly, Arlo moving that mouse onto the link that looked more promising than the mines only to bring up that new page. Bitcoin. What was a Bitcoin? What did it do? More importantly, how on earth could he use it other then to buy some magical sword in a game he’d probably never heard off.

The vampire hardly expected that conversion rate to appear on the screen, or those numbers of real currency to run beside them, his blue gaze widening readily. Real money!? He could trade it for real money!? His fingers near flew across that screen then, Arlo bringing up that convertor between bitcoin and those more easily understood American dollars, the man neatly typing in that amount he’d been left only to see the numbers rapidly begin to climb beside them to a figure sitting well over that two million dollar mark. Two. Million. Dollars. That could fix everything. That could pay for everything. He could buy things instead of steal them. He could move into a nice apartment, even better, one with hot water that worked and didn’t need to run for ten minutes before the warmth came in. That overly excited sound that escaped from him then prompting the Liberian to shush him, Arlo looking momentarily sheepish before turning his attention back to that screen. All he needed to do was cash it in, somehow, the man sure that couldn’t be all that hard to do and then he could finally, finally, start making some changes. God he could buy actual furniture! Then again, maybe he should actually pay off some of his debts- or all of them. What would that be like, to be debt free? He hardly dared to think of it.

His arm brushed briefly across his eyes, some strange stinging sensation seeming to have found them before he swept that Little Bear up into that impromptu hug, any thoughts of her being human so decidedly forgotten in those moments as he held her to him in that simple joy he seemed to have found tonight. Patrick hadn’t let him down after all. He never had. God he owed that man so much. Hell, he owed the Panda in his arms something too. It was that realisation alone that saw him release the little creature then onto the bench, Arlo reaching hurriedly for the keyboard to hold it out to her then. If she could type then she could communicate right? The vampire meeting her gaze then, his lip quirking into a grin before asking her just what she wanted, at least, what was within the realms of what he could give her with that money. He was oblivious, largely, to the anxiety that request seemed to have stirred within the girl, Arlo waiting expectantly as she lent forward once more to type out those few words, his bright blue gaze moving from that keypad to the screen and back again. That first word alone so prompted a frown to touch his features, Arlo’s head tilting slightly to the side before that ‘next time’ was added. Wasn’t that a supermarket? She wanted him to buy her a store? Could a Panda even be a small business owner?

“Oh! You want to go there?”

The idea that she might desire to visit it rather then own it had only just seemed to occur to him and yet that frown readily returned to his features. In all the world that was what she wanted? To visit a grocery store? It didn’t seem like terribly much. Then again it was her choice wasn’t it? Not his. If she wanted him to buy her groceries or….whatever else it was a Panda might want in a store then, well, he damn well would.

“If, that’s what you really want babe, then sure, why not?”

He could easily clear his schedule for next Friday to take her, Arlo assured that was one request he wouldn’t forget, the man turning then to log carefully out of those accounts, that password tucked safety back into that shoebox he clung to with far more determination then he had before. He’d have to keep this safe until tomorrow at least when he could work out a way to cash those coins into real money and store them in his accounts. Then he’d have to start tracking down those people he owed money too, a part of the man almost desiring to ask his pet to come with him and yet- if something went wrong…..his feature grimaced at even the thought of it. Maybe he better do that alone.

“Come on Chicka, lets get out of here. It’s been a damn long night.”

He pushed easily back from that desk then, one arm held out for the Panda to make her way up his shoulder and into that concealed part of his hoody to tuck herself away again as he folded it up to hide her from view- his hand rubbing softly at her fur once more before he made his way towards that entrance. Arlo hurried past that Liberian if only to prevent her catching any sight of his Panda scarf before stepping out onto the street- that night, somehow, suddenly seeming better, brighter and far more engaging. Arlo unable to stop that grin from touching his features now, his gaze shifting upward to eye his companion as he headed along that sidewalk. Maybe things actually would be ok. Maybe Sebastian had been right.

“Hey, Little Bear? Do you want a lift home? Its pretty late, we can go back to my place if you want or I can take you to yours. Ummm, oh, here! Left hand for my place, right hand for yours- just touch the one you want to go to. If you want me to take you to your place though your going to have to give me some instructions somehow. You know, I always wondered where you live, I mean, you’ve got someone taking care of you right?”

He held up both those hands a moment later, Arlo ignoring the passing glances those passers-by offered him as he walked about with his hands in the air, that query falling from his lips all the same, after all it was important to him, somehow, to know she had….someone.
