“Huh,” while absentmindedly glaring at the horrid thing called a “couch”, Navi thought about how long it had truly been since she had been living in isolation. She recalled the very first few nights she spent out scouring for a place to sleep. Her young, lost, frightened self, begging anyone to take her in, even if it was just for the night. Yet no one did. Numerous times the doors were slammed in her face, her pleas ignored in the streets, and people exploited her. Along with fleeing her hometown, she was shunned and taken advantage from strangers in desperate times of need, which made her grow to resent people. She was filled with hate and cynicism that led her to pursuit solitude for over 300 years. Until she met Andras, it seemed. Although she remained cautious of him, she felt that the emotionless face Andras usually sported was the same reason she kept her façade up as well. She couldn’t help but assume that they shared a similar past flooded with heartache and withdrawal from society.

“Navi,” a voice whispered. “Navi?”, the voice grew clearer. “Navi,” reemerging back to reality Navi finally heard Andras calling her name. Seeing he was looking quite amused at her getting lost in her own mind, he tells her that there is a bed instead of a floor to sleep on. “Beds that I know are on floors,” she retorted. “Why does that one not touch the ground? What purpose does that have?” she impudently questioned, feeling that the floor bed was a better method of sleeping. If it was anything like the couch, Navi wanted nothing to do with it. She was getting tired of the inventions that seemed to try and absorb her. Not wanting to be completely rude she sighed and stated, “Fine. I will try this odd contraption but if it’s ANYTHING like the couch, I will refuse to partake in anything other furniture exploration.” That was the best threat she could come up with at the moment. She was unquestionably out of her comfort zone. Sluggishly tugging off the covers on her body she rose and shuffled into the bedroom. “Flop!” the bed thumped as Navi flung herself face first onto it. He was right, it was pretty comfy.

Dragging her feet along the floor back out into the living room, she gathered all of the blankets and sheets and formed them into a giant ball as she scuffled back into the bedroom. A few moments later, she tottered back out to the living room and spit out one last thing to Andras before she called it quits for the evening. “I will sleep in the bedroom. Are you going to bed? Goodnight.” Not awaiting a response, she picked up her pace until she was near the bedroom and softly uttered, “Oh, and thank you… Andras.” Not wanting to let him see or hear any more things she considered a possible vulnerability, she shut the door, turned off the lights and made her way to the bed.

She could tell it had been a few hours since she lay in bed, wide awake. She pushed herself upright and sauntered over to open the curtains and let the moonlight flood the bedroom. It was unusual sleeping in total darkness and finding herself more alone with her thoughts than ever before, she needed the light to distract her. She wondered if Andras was up perhaps shuffling around at this time of night, or if he was fast asleep on the other level. She decided she couldn’t stand laying awake in the bed any longer and sneakily solved how to open the screen door in the bedroom and found herself climbing into a small tree hanging near the house. Wrapping herself up within the bedsheets she carried out, listening to the cars sporadically passing through the neighborhood and the birds starting to rise for the day, she finally found herself in a lull and drifted peacefully into a deep sleep.
