Arlo James

See what it's like to be a vulture's lunch

There was nothing that existed in that blackness of death. No dreams, no consciousness. Arlo very much that corpse his species was so fated to be in some sense or another until the last rays of that sun evaporated from the sky. He was largely oblivious to Abby’s entrance into that apartment or that his door, always left slightly ajar on those nights he was expecting his little Panda, had accidntally been blown shut by the breeze. Just as he was equally unaware of that chaos that followed in the moments his roommate seemed to discover that little bear tucked against the door. He stirred vaguely in response to that chaos and those sinking rays of light, his fingers barely twitching and yet that grip of death was nothing short of fierce. Arlo falling back under its sway time and time again. That scrabbling at his door and those shouts of his roommate utterly unheard and yet he was almost sure, almost, that he could hear something through that haze of blackness. Like a voice shouting somewhere in the distance and yet it sounded so far away. Maybe he didn’t hear it at all. The shattering off that glass seeing the man stir a little more, his features frowning slightly in that sleep as that sun finally sunk below the sky before that single, sudden, potent scent seemed to find its way into his room. Arlo’s eyes snapping suddenly open. The man sitting upright so quickly his mind so barely had time to work out where the hell he was and what was going on. He could smell blood. That scent slicing through that haze like a knife and yet, more than that, he could smell her blood.

“Abby?”

Those almost protective instincts seemed to flare in that moment, seizing the man with such force it was almost suffocating. Arlo out of that bed faster then he had ever gotten out of any bed in his life. The vampire hardly bothering with a shirt or jeans, Arlo striding towards the door in little more than his black boxer shorts. His focus almost single minded. His door suddenly swung open from the outside to reveal his clearly distress roommate standing outside it, her breath coming in gasps and yet Arlo barely seemed to notice her as he strode passed. That room was….a disaster. Upturned furniture seemed to decorate the room in the same fashion a hurricane tended to decorate. The ground littered with that broken glass. Arlo abruptly jerking to a stop at the sight of it. That confusion clear upon his features as he turned back towards Mi then. What on earth had she been doing!? Hell, it was usually him that made the mess, not her and yet even then he’d never quite made this much mess.

“Shit Mi, what the hell happened? Did someone break in? Are you alright? Where’s is she? Were’s my…..Abby? I can smell her blood. She’s hurt.”

His voice faltered slightly, Arlo seeming undecided on just what title to bestow that woman whom had been his pet for over a year only to reveal herself to be, well, a person. She was his friend, his best friend and yet she was….more than that, somehow, even if he hadn't exactly discussed the idea with her. None of it mattered now anyways. Not when she was injured, that panic rising within him again. The idea of his Little Bear hurt was more than he could take. God where was she? He had to get to her. Mi almost forgotten once more, Arlo barely hearing whatever words she might have offered in that moment as he strode towards that bathroom. How he knew the little Panda was behind that door he had no idea and yet he simply instinctively knew. He reached readily for that door, prying it open with far more force then he truly intended, those hinges dislodged as he did. Arlo briefly unaware of the force of his own strength in those moments. His thoughts fixated on rescuing his Panda alone. His blue gaze hurriedly flicking around that bathroom, following those bloodstained little prints that only made his heart tighten all the more before he finally spied that bundle off red fur hiding atop those cabinets near the mirror.

“Oh, babe….”

Those words were nothing short of soft, Arlo standing on his toes to reach up and gently lift that bundle of fur down and into his arms, hugging her to his bare chest. The man, for once, hardly carrying about his own mused hair and disheveled appearance. Arlo, of late, having become decidedly sensitive about what he wore on those evenings he knew Abby was coming over. The vampire leaning back against those cold bathroom tiles then, continuing to hold her against him. His attention upon her alone as one hand lifted to run through her fur, searching for wherever it was she was bleeding from. That scent so cloying and potent, that hunger tugging at him and yet it was somehow almost easy to dismiss. His concern for her overshadowing even that in a way nothing ever really had before. His voice far more gentle then it had ever been. The usually incapable man somehow seeming to take charge of that situation instantly.

“Shhh, don’t worry, I got ya. Let me see, where did ya get hurt, babe?”

His attention finally seemed to fall onto that paw, that glass still embedded within it. Something decidedly more….dangerous sparking within him at the sight of that injury and yet for that moment he pushed it downward. Those vampiric emotions threatening to wreck havoc and yet here and now he refused to allow them. Arlo at last stepping out of that bathroom, carrying Abby within his arms only to settle onto the couch and rest her on his lap, his fingers carefully keeping her little paw open to let him see that glass embedded within. It had to come out. Surely it couldn’t stay there right? Would it bleed more if he took it out? God he was hungry. The very notion that he had a doctor at his disposal hardly seemed to occur to him. How willing he would have been to surrender his little bear to anyone else was surely debatable all the same. He was aware, vaguely, of Mi moving somewhere behind him. The young woman’s presence at the side of that couch seeing Arlo turn sharply, clutching Abby closer towards him, the man reacting entirely without thinking then. His lips pulled back from his fangs, exposing those deadly points before that entirely furious hiss seemed to erupt from within him. The sound akin to a feral animal and one entirely designed to warn that woman away. His eyes near black in turn. Surprise suddenly flare on his own features. That black fading to offer that blue again. What the hell was that? Had he….hissed at her? He didn’t even know he could make that sound and yet for now it didn’t matter.

“Sorry I….I didn’t mean that. Just…..don’t come near me for a second yeah?”

It was safer that way, for the both of them, just for a minute. Arlo carefully taking Abby’s arm in his hand, his fingers delicately reaching to grasp that piece of glass before looking down towards his little pet. Arlo attempting to smile then, shaky though it was.

“This might hurt just a tiny bit, ok? I gotta get it out though- but i can fix it, I promise.”

That sounded reassuring right? He hoped it did. He hoped this worked. The glass looked like it went straight if anything. Something that went straight in could come straight out right? His hand gripped her arm (leg?) a little tighter giving her barely any warning before his fingers plucked at that glass, sliding that shard out of her paw as that fresh wave of blood rushed to the surface. Arlo tossed that bloodied piece back to the floor, the man still grasping her tiny paw before abruptly lifting it to his lips. Mi already thought he was insane, he was sure, this….probably wasn’t going to help her opinion of him and yet right now he was far more focused on what he could do to help Abby. His tongue brushed eagerly over that wound, the taste of that blood prompting a soft sound from within his throat and yet his saliva had already begun to coax that blood to clot and stop. Arlo pausing to lean away, running his tongue across his lips to catch and stray traces of that delicious blood before lifting his own thumb to his lips. He winced slightly as his fang pierced that tip, his blood welling to the surface now before he pressed his thumb to her paw. Massaging his blood into that wound to flare that rapid healing back to life (while undoubtedly breaking every health code violation on blood Mi had ever learned). If anything healed faster than a Were- it was surely a vampire. His blood adding to Abby’s own healing ability to work on closing that wound entirely. Arlo at last happy with his work. The vampire sighing softly and yet his arms remained about his best friend all the same. Even as he managed that lopsided grin.

“You alright now, Chicka?”

One handed lifted to rub behind her ear. Arlo, at last, returning his attention to Mi then. The man managing something of a guilty look. His free hand running through his hair then. He really hadn't meant to make that weird...cat sound at her. Hell, he wasn’t even sure why he did? Some part of him simply unwilling to let anyone near his Abby. As foolish and archaic as that idea was. When did he get this possessive? His gaze running over Mi then to make sure she was in one piece.

“What happened? How did Abby lock herself in the bathroom? What are you doing with that broom? I’m sorry about the...er...hissing….snarling thing there. I didn't really know i could make that sound honestly. Sorry about that. Im fine now I promise.”
