He could feel her relax beneath the touch of his lips and he smiled against her soft skin, relishing each time he got to see the magic of his affect on her. It never ceased to amaze him, how very strong and yet how very vulnerable she could make him feel all at the same time. He felt invincible every time he looked in her eyes and saw only a reflection of himself and the love she held for him but he knew if anything were to happen to her, he would rip himself or this world to pieces until he was able to join her again. She was his anchor, his rock, his everything. She held so much power without even knowing it. He didn't know how he got so lucky to have her feel the same way as he did for her but he would give up anything to keep it forever. From the moment he saw her as a human at the carnival, he knew she was something special and even then, he knew his urge to talk to her, just to be near her, was his body's way of instinctively claiming her, even then. She pulled his hand to her porcelain cheek where he let his fingers idly stroke her flesh, his eyes never leaving her own as she looked to him before motioning for him to sit in the chair beside her. His lips twitched in a smile as he silently did just that, slowly lowering himself to the chair though the tension was palpable in his frame still. He felt like his heart would be racing if he were human, his legs jittery like he could run a marathon. He would be sweating, his pupils dilated but he couldn't look away from Isolt cause as long as she was okay, he knew that everything else would be okay. The only thing that managed to pull his gaze from hers was when she looked to the screen and squeezed his hand, obvious emotions in her beautiful eyes. Slowly and almost reluctantly, he moved to follow her gaze, only to have his own lips part in wonder at the sight they were beholding. He could make out the tiny hands and feet, like some little alien reaching for the sky. He barely heard what the doctor said about a heartbeat, focusing only on seeing those little shapes take form on the screen. As Isolt leaned forward, he heard himself saying "shhh" as if in reassurance, his gaze finding hers once more as she squeezed his hand that much harder in anticipation. And then, there it was. He could hear the tiny heartbeats and knew them to be true, his gaze widening before he could think about it. Something squeezed in his chest and even though he knew he didn't have a heartbeat himself, he could have sworn he felt it constrict just as if it could. As Isolt fell back, he instinctively put his hand behind her head to cushion it, leaning over to brush a soft adoring kiss across her forehead as a small smile tugged at her lips. He could tell she had been stressing about this moment and suddenly he felt so selfish. Of course she had been wearing a mask of hope and anticipation all this time when truly she must have been simply terrified that this was all for naught. And there he was just dreading the consequences if it was like he was all alone in this. But he was never alone. As her gaze searched for his once more, he felt a smile pull at his lips, his fingers stroking her hair back from her forehead as if for comfort. He caught the words of the doctor this time and his gaze widened again, a long exhale falling from his lips as he leaned over to kiss Isolt's cheek. "You hear that, baby? We're gonna have ourselves a real diva on our hands if she's anything like you." His words were light and teasing even as he slowly pulled his gaze to the doctor. He looked back at the screen, memorizing every curve and shape that made up the unborn child living in his fiance's womb. "She's perfect, just like her mother." He half whispered the words, never taking his gaze off the screen. |
