North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city, the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high-class architecture. The pristine streets are paved with stone and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting - for the right clientele. In the North, every establishment is eager to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - whether it happens to be illegal or merely involves looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allows them the luxuries that the North provides.

Little angel go away, come again some other day.
The devil has my ear today.

I wish I had learned earlier to keep my humor in check around any were-creature. It was rare that they seemed to share a human sense of humor, and even more rare that they would share the dysphoric humor of a warlock who had a bad temper, and even worse television references. Sighing with exasperation, I rescinded my original idea that I wasn't going to smoke the cigarette prove that maybe a little cancer wasn't going to frighten me off of the nicotine buzz I had craved for too many years, now.

"Maybe that's the point," I retorted flatly. Who knows, maybe the sarcasm would be lost on her, too. Tobias had taught me that it was very... human, of me to think that the weres had any care of sarcasm or humanoid emotions. Instinct, though. That was another story. Instead of over analyzing the emotions and actions of a human, maybe a were simply felt on their instincts telling them how to live. How much easier would it be, if humans did the same? If we neglected our over analyizations and walked away from our preconceptions, misconceptions, and feelings... The world would be a softer, easier place. Granted, let's be real and give ourselves the â€" fuck it, we don't get a benefit of a doubt. We would never be able to be as honest and genuine as a creature who must rely on their instincts.

That being said, I could see her instincts taking over the moment she looked away from me, and to the ground. The submission made me uncomfortable, and I dropped the cigarette as if my point was made and I was apologizing for making her feel like she should look away. As an equal, she deserved respect and dignity, not the feeling that she owed me submission. Perhaps the slump of her shoulders was in relation to the comment about bestiality, but the idea only brought a half smile to my lips. Bestiality offended her? The terminology was meant only to assure her that I had honest intentions in walking her home. Getting a woman home safely was far more a priority than a happy ending of an evening in a personal regard.

"You guess? What kind of man do you think I am?" I asked slowly, my voice a little softer and clearly amused as if I was trying to remind her that I was defending her honor just a little time prior. I offered her a very slight smile, feeling my stride fall into her pace. "Don't be sorry, but have mercy on the mere human, yeah? Especially the human with a propensity for lung cancer," I added wryly, finding myself amused with more than the conversation, but at the desire I had to keep her safe.

Unfortunately, that desire was about to get stronger. The sound of male voices behind us was increasing and it was only begging for my attention. I grit my teeth, squaring my shoulders like an animal might when faced with a threat. Maybe humanoids have animal instinct, too. With a disapproving groan, I ran a hand through my hair and retraced my gaze from the woman to the location the voices were coming form.

"Try and get home as quickly as possible, yeah?" My accent slipped out stronger, showing the preparation I was making mentally to deal with the men. "I won't be long, and I want to make sure you're okay when I'm finished with them."
