all this devotion was rushing over me, and the crashes are heaven, for a sinner like me, but the arms of the ocean deliver me.

Awaiting Rowena's judgment and approval of my creations sent a cold and slow shiver up my spine. It didn't help that the man who had previously been standing in my place was cowering behind her, chewing his fingernails in a way that was entirely unsanitary, especially in a kitchen of this caliber. My eyebrow rose in surprise that he would even engage in such a behavior with his superior â€" no, his employer and ultimately his boss so close by. Especially when clearly, his job was on the line. Maybe he didn't understand the circumstances in which I had arrived in this exact location in this exact time period. I didn't hesitate to shoot him a sharp look and as my eyes narrowed pointedly in his direction, I realized that I would have to be attune to my behavior at all times in this kitchen. Would that be so difficult? The precision with which the witch would demand was something I was accustomed to, and wouldn't presume to perform any less. There was a confidence with which I presented Rowena the dishes I created, effusing from my fingertips. I wasn't prepared for the poise I held myself with in front of her, but inwardly? I was delighted. Her judgment awaited, rolling off of her lips in the form of a brusque command that I continue my work in the kitchen until the "rush" was over and she could better approve my work. I nodded a little too enthusiastically, inwardly chiding myself for the display in front of her.

I had no words to bid the matron goodbye with, and instead I quickly focused my attention to the work at hand. Her kitchen was well stocked with both ingredients and employees, although there was something lacking that I had noticed on walking into the room with her. Poise? No, Henry held the kitchen together well with orders in a low, commanding, and comforting voice that would encourage quick work. Praise, perhaps. I took more command than Rowena had offered me, knowing full well that might cost me the opportunity but without anything ventured, not a single thing gained. Immediately, production time decreased though the yield of the dishes was no less impeccable. The flurry of activity and smells was garnished by a different kind of productivity; the vibe, so to speak, of the kitchen had changed from frustrated and disheveled with the work of the Sous Chef who was now unfortunately washing dishes at an alarmingly slow rate, to vibrant and lively. Pleased, I was able to return to the creations I had begun while under the piercing gaze of the witch who owned the business.

As the night slipped by without my knowledge of the hours so quickly passing, I found the rush of orders and dishes waning. The order slips weren't being passed down the line as quickly, which gave me an ample opportunity to educate who may soon be my associates in what I wanted from them under the careful and watchful eye of Henry. My ideas for dishes hadn't been too difficult, yet; surely they would be able to process these suggestions and follow the "specials" I had created for the night without my eyes boring into them while I made my way to talk to Rowena. She had requested my presence after the evening rush, and as it was clear that the rush was over and many employees were finished with their work, it seemed to be a suitable hour to approach the witch back in her office. After excusing myself from Henry's care, I found my way through the halls of the exquisite hotel back to the owner's office, and knocked without hesitation, a handful of papers including our sales for the "shift" and a notice that her kitchen was, in fact, not in compliance with a handful of sanitation means.

Probably the demoted "new" dishwasher, right?
