He rolls his eyes at my maneuver, baiting him with the fake Christmas tree idea as he sighs and and chuckles. He must admit, my reflexes are still quick. He says I can pick it but brings up the mall and my face dampens a little. I hate crowds. It means having to be on your toes none stop and looking at everyone like they could pull a knife and kill you at any second. I probably tend to do more of the scary looks that make other people think I'll be the one doing the killing but that's only if provoked, of course. Otherwise I just like to keep one hand on my blade at all times just in case I need to throw it at someone cause you know, you never know when a were or vampire or witch is going to jump out and hurt someone. It happens. I scowl at the agreement I've suddenly gotten myself into but none the less, I sigh and shrug my shoulders in defeat. "Fine. But we're going in the middle of the day and you're carrying a weapon." My eyes narrow, daring him to argue. I'm sure I'm not the only one not fully looking forward to this shopping trip. He probably remembers how the last one went as well. I swear that salesgirl was going to bite someone. Okay, maybe they were the fake fangs you can buy at the local Hot Topic shop but how was I to know? Vampires can have the power to walk in the sun now, you know. It probably didn't help matters any that I caught her winking at Kohl. Who cares if he was too busy looking at a new pair of Ray Bans? It matters that I saw. So then I had to calm myself down by dragging him into a sporting goods shop cause what can I say? Exercising soothes me. Just looking at those tread mills made me tired and therefore, calmed me. It's my own form of medicine, so sue me. Of course I was surprised that he's been lying awake at night worrying about me. First off, I thought he was confident enough in my abilities to know I'm going to win every time but more than that, I guess I just didn't want to think about him worrying. I just told myself the sound of me coming in at night woke him from sleeping. Maybe he's a light sleeper at night and just a heavy ass sleeper during the day cauase I know he's a nightmare to try to wake up before noon. He should know that I don't have caller ID on my phones either cause really, who needs that? I'm hardly home to answer the phone, much less want to know who's calling. He's fidgeting and it's not helping my own adrenaline rush in this moment of entrappment. He keeps tapping his fingers and running his hand through his hair and it just makes me want to touch his hair too. It's so touchable, so soft and silky. I almost envy it. I'm going to have to steal his shampoo and conditioner one of these nights cause I bet it's top notch. Probably at least ten bucks a bottle. He moves his gaze back to the road and maybe that helps me gain the confidence to actually reach out and entwine my fingers with his. He looks over at me with genuine surprise and I almost want to slap him. Did he really not see this coming? Is it not obvious that I care about him? I haven't stabbed him yet so that should have told him something. I haven't even punched him that I can remember. Drunk nights don't count cause I don't remember. When I'm done talking, he actually chuckles and my lips twitch in a smirk, glad that I've managed to at least make him happy. That's all I've really ever wanted. He admits that relationships aren't his thing either and don't I know it. His gratitude has me raising my brow in amusement that he would actually thank me for acknowledging our feelings but whatever, I'll take it. He tells me that's all he needed to know and just like that, the tension seems to leave the cab and I feel my bunched muscles starting to loosen. He goes back to driving, moving away from the traffic light and going toward his place. I actually manage a smile in this moment, turning my own gaze back to the road. Whatever this night has in store from here, bring it on. |
