Anacosta Heights

Situated above the daily life of the city, Anacosta Heights is a tucked away suburb featuring extravagant neo-gothic inspired mansions. The inhabitants of this neighborhood often show their overwhelming wealth with sports cars lining their long, circular driveways, large pools, and manicured gardens. The homeowners of Anacosta Heights treasure their privacy as seen by the high iron gates to the security personnel present at every entrance.

Dupont Circle

Dupont Circle is a small suburban neighborhood settled within the serene portion of the southern portion of town. These four-bedroom, single-family homes feature back yards, porches, garages, and far more breathing space then the Village offers. This neighborhood often is more family orientated and even has organized events for children and the neighborhood as a whole.

Hawethorn Village

Settled in the middle of downtown, Hawthorn Village consists of several victorian inspired row houses just off the main street. Due to it's convenience to just about everything, the village can be a tad expensive to live within. However, the residents of this neighborhood often have two to three-story townhouses, often with a one to two-car garage. Many of the houses feature bay windows and/or rooftop terraces with a small fenced-in 'yard'.

River Dale

River Dale primarily consists of apartments that, despite their age and industrial appearing interior, still hold to the Victorian history that permeates the town. These apartments are often the cheapest option and sport scuffed, older wooden floors, open floor plans, visible beams, and the occasional brick wall.

I've seen enough movies with people that smoke to understand what humans can say is the appeal of them. They have conversations while blowing smoke at each other and go on special breaks at work. They seem cooler to other people, especially kids, when they're doing it. But why hurt yourself just for attention? That's the part I don't get. He tries to explain though, saying that it makes life more colorful. I contemplate for a moment, furrowing my brow in concentration before finally I nod in acknowledgement. I may not fully understand but at least he's trying.

"I guess."

I say with a light shrug. When he throws the cigarette down, I'm even more puzzled. Why bother getting out a cigarette if you're just going to toss it uselessly to the ground seconds later? When I ask about it, he sighs and shakes his head. At first I don't expect him to answer. Did I say something wrong? But then he speaks. His reply surprises me. He cares that I'm uncomfortable? It's just so...different.

"Oh."

It's all I can think of to say. At least his voice has softened. I feel like I'm just starting to learn a little about him when the voices crank up in volume behind us. My reaction is immediate, fear eminating from me. I shudder a little at his words when he asks me to save the mercy for when they've been "dealt with." I don't like the sound of that but I also don't want them to find me. I know that I can't change his mind about what he's about to do so instead I just listen to him. I nod wordlessly in reply and then take off into the night.

Once I'm back at the house, I shift back and stand there shivering in the front hallway. I rush to put some clothes on and then pace by the door. Would he really come to check on me? What if he was just saying that to make me run? I hug my arms around myself and lean against the wall, biting into my lower lip. The house is empty like it is most nights. The fireplace is cold and empty and I hope to have fresh logs on it within the hour. When no one's home, I like to sit down in front of the fireplace and read or just stare into the flames. It's peaceful.

But then I hear the knocking. I jump at first, having zoned out for a minute. Pulling myself back to reality, I slowly go to the door. My hands are shaking as I twist the knob, unsure of what I'm going to find on the other side. I feel a huge wave of relief when it's Davante on the other side and he's alone, but then I glance down at his hands and my eyes widen.

"Your hands...are you okay?"

I look back up at him, eyes glistening with concern. I look around to make sure he is truly alone before I stand aside.

"At least let me clean you up. It's the least I can do."
