Broken but Not Shattered

Olivia flinched away as the bush next to her exploded with motion. She let out a strangled gasp. She forced herself to not scream as she was gripped by fear. She closed her eyes and crouched down trying to curl herself into ball. After a few seconds when she realized she was not being attacked. She cautiously lifted her head , and opened her eyes to be met with the excited form of a dog. Olivia was surprised, but she had no fear of dogs. She had grown up with dogs her whole life until a certain day. She cautiously reached out a hand to try and pet the puppy, but as she a single sharp whistle broke the near silence of the night. Olivia's hand snapped back to her body, but then she froze. Fear caused her to freeze. Her mind began to race. She quickly sniffed the air, but she didn't smell the telltale blood of a living body. Whoever has whistled had to be like her. She stood as the dog continued to circle her, but as she did she saw the form of a man appearing from around the bush.
Olivia bit her lip in an effort to focus. Her instinct screamed for her to run, and that this vampire somehow knew her crime. She wanted to scream and run with every ounce of her being, but she also knew that was unlikely to help. She was far too weak from her starvation to get very far before a healthy vampire would catch her. She turned her head enough that half of her face was visible from where the male vampire stood with his other dog. As the man spoke to her Olivia felt a shiver run down her spine. Confusion began to mix with her fear. His words were kind sounding, but she still felt fear. The fear had warped her. She watched as the man seemed more concerned with his dog. "I-it's okay. I li-like dogs. Wouldn't hurt it sir." Her words came out slow and raspy. The act felt strange. She hadn't spoken in quite some time. Her voice was weak, but she was sure she was loud enough to be heard. She had barely gotten the words out past the nearly choking sensation in her throat. Maybe if she was lucky she could escape the situation without having to run.
