When we wrote this, we had tattoos in mind. For example, my character Serafina has a moon with a cat tattooed on her shoulder which is in her database picture. They kind of just magically appear when they learn enough to become a witch >.> But we're pretty open on your interpretation of this so if you just want to make it like a weird shaped birthmark or something - go ahead :-)
