The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

This guy is good, I will admit. I notice every time he moves a little bit closer, as if he's trying to cut off my very oxygen with his proximity. He must know just how to use his power to the best of his abilities. Damn blood suckers, always looking for the fear in someone's eyes like it gets them off or something. Sorry, bucko, but you're not scaring me. It must be hard to scare anyone with those bright hazel eyes. Oh damn it, stop looking at his eyes. As he motions for the bartender, I raise a brow at him. "And what makes you think I'll like what you're having? It might be a bit too strong for my taste." Even as I say it, my gaze drops to his muscular bicep and I have to jerk my gaze away, ashamed and still confused as hell. I hated it when Kohl turned up the powers on me and I hate it when an absolute stranger does it to me now. I give a look to the bartender as he sets down the shot of whiskey, apparently enough to make him retreat with haste as I turn back to the vampire. He doesn't seem surprised at all by my mention of the council so he must have had run-ins with them before. I'm sure that was pleasant. I feel a tingle the minute he starts talking and I inhale sharply, goosebumps running down my arms unbidden as I jerk my hand back from the bar as if it's too close to him. My brows furrow as I clear my throat, trying to find my thoughts. "Frightened? The Council does not fear you or any of your kind, Malek. They're deciding if they should stake you before you try to do something stupid, is all." I try to make it sound as determined as I want to feel but all I can think about is how it was almost sexy, the way he said it. I raise a brow, clearly impressed. "Gold star for you. Do you want a cookie, too?" I manage somehow to insert sarcasm in my voice though I can't look at his face while I say it. When he mentions him being single, my lips part indignantly and I snap my gaze to his. "I would no sooner care about your relationship status then I care about global warming. You give yourself far too much credit." I can't help but bite my lip at the end though, his wink almost reducing my legs to jelly. Damn him! At least he does manage to give me some useful information, telling me he's not in a coven but has been approached. I scowl for a moment, thoughtful, before I smile. "Good, keep it that way. The coven doesn't need more gunpowder. I hear they've already got a deranged little girl vampire with the power to make them all her puppets if she so fancies." I roll my eyes at their poor decision making skills, trying not to think about touching his arm. Are vampires really cold or is that just a myth? I've never really thought about the temperature of their skin when I'm fighting and staking. Why am I worried about it now? Ugh, this sucks. How did I get volunteered for this assignment? When he leans in closer, my breathing gets more shallow and my skin gets warmer, almost like it's on fire and I squirm a little without thinking about it. My lips tighten into a thin line as I try to glare at him but I'm distracted by his lips talking. "Not hardly. Have you found a place of settlement yet? They'll have someone tracking you, you see. Just standard protocol for the first couple months to make sure you keep to your strict no human diet." When he asks for my name, I lick my lips a little. They suddenly feel dry and parched. "Katarina." |
