East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

sorrow waited, sorrow won

i live in a city sorrow built
it's in my honey, it's in my milk
Looking for a place to come in from the rain and the hum of magic outside took his mind off everything - off the threatening buzz of the thoughts of others, like a thousand hornets behind a wall he'd built himself; off the mouth of sadness that lurked behind the creaky door to his apartment and hid in the corners there like cobwebs. It was a good distraction, the rain and the magic, but perhaps too much of one. Usually he would have noticed something like an approaching person, someone getting too close to him, pushing through the mental block like a schoolchild in a red rover game. Kendralis's approach caught him completely off-guard, though, and her sadness slammed into him like a storm wave.

He felt drenched as the girl fell, dark eyes wide as her sadness washed over him. It was more an emotion than a thought, but he had been sensitive of late, and Kendralis's thoughts seemed to jumble into an indistinct haze of misery. Matt stood numbly above her, his consciousness reaching like a hand into hers and brushing against the pages of her thoughts. There was sadness, dying, guilt; her hurt was similar to his, impossibly so, though if he'd caught it all in the brief seconds he'd read her thoughts her loss was not yet complete.

Shake it off, a voice murmured in his own head, stirring him from Kendralis's mind. You can't stay here. And surely he couldn't; another facet of the fault in his telepathy was losing himself to the thoughts of one person, particularly if he was caught off-guard by their arrival as he had been with Kendralis. Whatever kind of self-preservation that told him not to step into the sun and to be wary of others in general whispered to him now, though, to withdraw, to avoid getting stuck in the thoughts of the girl who'd crashed into him with her sadness. Besides, it wouldn't do to just stand there while she had what seemed like a mental breakdown on the concrete in front of him, and an appropriate amount of reaction time had passed. He had to do something.

The vampire took a knee beside her, leaning in slightly as he withdrew from her thoughts. "Hey..." he offered, slight concern darkening his own wet face. "No one's gonna kick you. C'mon," Matt assured as he extended his hand, a half-smile curving his lips up in encouragement. Hopefully this girl would accept the help; if not, he'd feel stupid. Something told him perhaps she needed the company, though.
