East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

I may not have known Isolt very long when she was human but even in the short span of time I did know her, it was easy to read into her gullible innocence. True, she knew to use caution with me from the get go and she might have turned and ran if it were not for my gift of persuasion. She fell for the trick with flying colors though and in moments we were as true friends, talking over a hotdog at a carnival. I still recall this memory quite fondly and I hope to make more fond memories with the redhead, yet something tells me this time she won't be as easy to coerce. Something has cracked in her, something has erroded away with the turning of her from living to undead.

I still think that innocence lives within her, just a little deeper under that thick skin. She made a mistake and now she's trying to learn from it. Good for her. She must have trusted the wrong person to get in this predicament and now she doesn't know who to trust. Smart girl. Maybe I'm not the guy she should trust. Maybe she should have just kept walking when I spoke to her on the street, but alas, here we are. She offers a smile but I can tell she's not really feeling. Few ever see the humor in some of my more sarcastic jokes. I think it's just cause they're not as bitter as I am yet.

She asks me another question and I have to contemplate this one. Finally I tilt my head and stroke my chin before answering.

"Yes and no. I did intend to become a vampire but the timing couldn't have been worse. The one I intended to turn for was believed dead and I no longer wished that fate. Yet my father still found fit to shoot that bullet into my chest."

The bitterness is obvious in my voice. My own father shot me and that is one bite that will never lose its venom. He pronounced me a traitor for falling in love with the wrong girl. After all I'd done for him and the family, I was the traitor. I'm the one who donned those uniforms and went off to war. I'm the one who had the guts to return after our defeat. I'm the one who carried the elder responsibilites of the house hold and yet I was the traitor. I will never forgive that man for what he took from me.

I glance up as I nudge my glass toward her, wanting to move on to better subjects. She looks as thought she'd love to turn down my offer but I know she's practically starving by the way she downed the last glass so it's no surprise when she grasps this one just as firmly and drinks from it. I click my fingers at the bartender and he goes to work making two more glasses before hurridly bringing them to the table. Warm, just like the first ones. I take a sip from my glass this time, figuring she'll be too stubborn or proud to drink from it a second time. If she's still ravenous by the end of this, I may just have to skip the bull and take her hunting.

I watch as she plays with the wood of the table, obviously thinking about something that's got her curious. I tilt my head, watching her expectantly till she finally voices her thoughts. I can't help but chuckle dryly under my breath, shaking my head before I lean forward on my elbows and answer.

"Not unless you make it better."
