Dareios listens with interest as Dorian describes his first interactions with his soon-to-be husband. It's a charming story, romantic even, and enough to crack a smile on the pessimistic vampire's lips. "A romance for the modern ages." He says upon reflection of Dorian's tale, raising his glass in a casual but purposeful meaning to 'cheers' his friend. "I'm truly happy for you, my friend." He confirms. And it's true, Dareios is happy for the Fae King. As far as he could tell, Dorian was deserving of such love and such lavish existence. Though they were new friends, Dareios felt he was a good judge of character, given the many faces he'd met over his long tenure in this lifetime. He saw no malice behind Dorian's eyes. That was rare. But the skepticism persists deep inside the vampire, over this notion of love and soulmates, and what have you. Some may be destined for such happiness, or companionship at least, but it wasn't for everyone. Dareios would be lying if he said he didn't yearn for what Dorian described that he had with Sebastian. Of course he wanted to feel something like that. Dorian's tale of meeting his beau reminded him dreadfully of Aisling, a love and a pain he wished so desperately to forget. The love had been all encompassing. The vampire wasn't sure he'd ever felt something so powerful. That was until he felt the pain of her departure from this world. It still ached in a way that couldn't be matched by anything so worldly: not garlic, not silver, not even death by a wooden stake, he believed. But life went on without her. He found ways to keep busy, to find purpose. Hell, he was the mayor of an entire city for Christ's sake. Nevertheless, the vampire was happy when the subject changed and Dorian revealed the ancient scripts from his pocket. When he asks about willy nilly, Dareios can't help but laugh. He opens his mouth as if to begin to explain the slang, but closes it as he tries to quickly find a way to reveal its meaning. He shakes his head and holds up a hand before clasping his friend on the shoulder in defeat. "Don't worry about it, my friend." He says cheerily, but in a dismissive tone. He listens with interest, however, as Dorian perks up about the offer to set up a meeting with the local curator. Dareios nods his head in a confirmatory matter. "Of course, I'm happy to arrange." He says matter-of-factly, revealing a phone from his pocket and jotting down a few notes in his calendar to remind him of this duty. The vampire is rudely distracted by his phone when Dorian brings him back into the present moment, changing the subject entirely. Dareios is caught off guard as he weighs his blunt but poignant question, his head tilting upward as he gathers his thoughts and secures the phone back in his jacket pocket. "It is a curious question." Dareios confirms, buying him some time. "My job is... well, there are more difficult days than easy ones." He begins, pausing briefly to take a sip of his wine. "But after so many years on this Earth, it is a challenge I don't mind." He says. "My own life, my personal life is under such incredible scrutiny, this is true. But I don't mind. The feeling I get when I make an impact for the people who live here, when I do something that benefits them and this community, it's hard to put into words. But it makes it all worth it." He says, just a small semblance of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Vampires have an image problem. From folklore to now, we've always been viewed as monsters, the ultimate predators to others. This is not untrue, but what year is it? We have the means to live and work together, to contribute to a society that works for every kind. That is what I believe. And that is why I do this." He said, his voice becoming more strict and more passionate as his thoughts continue to swirl. "I wish to lead by example. That's why I don't feed on humans directly anymore. The blood bank at the hospital supplies me with what I need to survive. I'm working with the university to fund a synthetic source of nutrients sans blood, as well. It was difficult, of course, to control my more, natural instincts at first, but it's nothing discipline, general will power and a strong intellect can't handle." Dareios Auerbach | Vampire | Vinyl |
