The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

One would expect a certain sense of self-preservation in the face of some kind of danger, right? It would seem that in a city crawling with creatures who had powers that many minds couldn't even fathom, that a sense of self-preservation would develop into something incredibly strong and acute, accurate enough to send even the most powerful creatures into a spiral of at least some form of anxiety, anticipating the future potentially dangerous situation they might find themselves in the midst of. My brother had spoken of this sort of feeling, the way it crept up on him like a fever in the moments before he found himself faced with the unknown, and potentially hazardous. How were you to know when something, or someone, was a being or object you couldn't face? The idea had been hard to wrap my mind around when entering the city with any kind of permanence, assured safety by both of my brothers' existence. And as that safety traipsed off into the night following some kind of threat, I felt the chill of the frigid wind scathe through my clothing and skin, bleeding into my very bones. The girl who we had sought to aid was a welcome distraction, and in that moment the light I could expel was far stronger than anything I had been able to manage in quite the while. As she falls, I find my breath hitching in my throat with no visible air leaving my lungs in the darkness that now surrounds us as the light has faded with the retreating backs of marauders, trailed by the capable hands of my brother. I knew they were no match for him, even with their numbers greater than his one. Surely, Davante would find some form of punishment suitable for the group of men and he would execute said punishment with little to no guilt as they were the lowest form of degenerates in his opinion and instead of his retreating back I could imagine the suit of armor and the white horse beneath him now. Though I could not stay in the imaginary image long as the girl's voice permeated my thoughts, telling me that she was the pain. Had they not been - ... Had we chosen the wrong target? Clearly, something was wrong with her, and the light had shaken the men off of her scent but it was possibly my instincts had been wrong, and she hadn't needed us. Davante would be satisfied with having prey to hunt, but I wasn't so sure this is where I was supposed to be any longer. The footsteps behind me removed my attention from the young woman once more, allowing me to focus on the newcomer as if to assess whether or not he was another perverted fool that should be warded off. I had half a mind to raise a ball of light, and send it hurling in his direction until a sense of familiarity arose between the young woman and the man, his voice holding enough authority over her that I stepped back to allow his arrival at her side. When he hardly noticed my presence or my aid in the matter, I felt my jaw tighten and my eyes narrow as he sought to prove to the girl she would be fine. Hadn't I told her that? Indignant, I exhaled the breath I didn't realize I was holding, and as if to remind both the girl and male who had just arrived I was still present, the light began to emanate from my fingers once more. It was to give the girl a guiding light, as if at the end of the tunnel, to focus on as her words led me to believe she was closer to unconsciousness. The light would be a good distraction, enough that she would have something to hold onto. As the girl finds stability, she rises though the action is as flimsy as the legs of a newborn foal. Extending a hand to her, I let my eyes soften, and even more so as her words hit my ears. She's grateful, and while the man who had shown up had neither my attention nor my acknowledgement, he received a distrusting glance before I offered the girl a gentle smile. "Let's go somewhere inside so you can warm up. There's a diner that's open late just around the corner..." |
