East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

ophelia hastings

There was a rhythm that I missed: of a heartbeat that often echoed through my dreams. I never knew who it belonged to, but it was something that had been a comfort when I fought with trying to kill myself. It was a steady thump, thump, thump that helped me center myself. As I walked down a crowded city street, not unlike the one where I found the woman, my skin itched and burned; I needed to hear that heartbeat. I needed to find that center.

Stopping, I looked up at the crowded sky. Ledges of buildings and empty windows, as empty as the faces of the strangers that walked by me. I could feel their annoyance---how dare I stop in the middle of where they're trying to walk? I was interrupting their routine. I was ruining the general flow of their day. It was how they were the day I found that woman, too. They were annoyed. Lacked compassion. How dare this woman try and take her life were trying to walk!

I longed for this kind of bliss.

As hands grabbed me, pulled me, I closed my eyes. Had a Dark Hunter come for me already? The death I had flirted with in those dark months had never felt as close as it did now. Hand on my throat, I could feel the ice in his touch. It confused me; vampires knew better. My blood, that silver liquid in my veins, was lethal to them. Perhaps, I thought, I'm just a suicide magnet. My name on his lips wasn't something I was prepared for.

"What?"

Eyes snapping open, I looked into the face of the vampire that held me. His eyes burned into me and, while I could see I was familiar to him, I found no recognition in his sharp jawline, his dark hair, or his empty eyes.

"How do you know me?"
