East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

How does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?

There is a warmth that lingers. It splinters through my veins, moving slowly from my gut back up through my body. It envelopes me, holding me when I'm weakest, singing me to sleep when I've had just enough. It's that first dizzy spell that hooks me. I feel loose, limber. I willingly give up control to the whiskey, relieved for the rest it represents. I am drunk. Most of the time, I'm happy to be. But in front of her, I feel like a fumbling fool.

My hand moved to touch the marred skin just above my cheek bone, the faint scar was the constant reminder of the time I had spent behind bars. My life as a man, as a mortal, a human, was worthless. I had grown hard, much like my father, and much like him, good at caring about what was happening only to me right now, and not the future. I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I knew it was only a matter of time until the cops showed up one day and they didn't disappoint.

I was a stupid young buck, dumb to think that I was capable of creating some sort of life for myself. I was a god damn Taylor after all, predetermined to follow down the same, rugged and disappointing path of my father and the father that came before him. I'm not naive enough to think that being a hunter would somehow erase my past or numb the things in me that made me who I am. But it did give me some direction. It pulled me out of that redneck town in 'sota. It made me feel like I had something to contribute to this world.

Fire doesn't know much about me. She knew I came to New York with only the clothes on my back. She knew I lived in the park after I left her apartment. She didn't know about my past, and couldn't know about what I am now. I've been surprised by some of my prey, ones who were able to make me in a crowd. The fear when they spotted me, it drained the color from their skin. She can feel I'm different, too. I want to tell her. But I don't want her to look at me the way they always do.

"I drink too much." I mutter, finally, kicking one worn boot over the other as I cross my legs. I finish what's left the cigarette and flick it into the street. I dig my sore hands into the pockets of my jeans. I can feel the knife behind my belt digging into my back. Then I look at her. "And I'm a hunter now."

An eyebrow raises as I wait to gauge her reaction. I shouldn't have told her but I want to tell her everything. Maybe that's the whiskey's fault. I stand tall, pushing myself off the back of the cold, brick wall and pull my coat tighter across my chest. "You hungry? I'm buying."
