She looks down at her club sandwich, wishing she could just dive right in and eat it along with the pickle on the side. She was starving and couldn't wait to taste it. And yet...she already asked the waitress for the to-go-box and her bill. She fully intended on paying for her meal before she skipped out on him. She was a respectable girl, always paying her bills and never thought of participating in a "dine and dash" scheme.
She listens as he offers to take her out on the town because she seemed tense. She sighed. "You'd be tense too if you knew anything about me." She had been on her own since she was sixteen. She had to earn money to care for herself. It was stressful being homeless. She didn't to go out or have fun. Those things costs money and every penny that she made went to paying for meals so she didn't starve. Being homeless was not a life she had chosen, but it was a life that she was given. She had to make the best of her situation.
She thinks about his offer for a moment, wondering just why he wanted to have a night on the town with her. There were thousands of other women in Sacrosanct that he could hit on. Why her? She didn't think she was that beautiful and honestly, her personality was probably a bit off-putting. But here he was, asking her. "Why me? Why not someone else?" She takes another sip of water and decides that while she's entertaining his offer, she might as well eat something. She grabs her pickle and bites into it, the acid assaulting her taste buds in the best manner.
Once she's finished with her pickle, she wipes her fingers gingerly on the napkin provided. The waitress returns to the table and hands her the bill and a to-go box. Emmy spends the next few seconds thumbing through her dollar bills and quarters until she pulls out enough money to pay for the meal. She looks back at him. "If you're really serious, I have two conditions." She waits until she has his undivided attention. "You're paying...and you can't be a dick. You need to be genuine...a gentleman." Emmy was not a frequent dater. The idea of having some fun was fascinating...but she wasn't sure she could stomach an entire evening with him if he was going to act like a fool the whole night. She at least wanted to enjoy her evening.
