This was always his damn luck. He had been attacked multiple times since coming back to Sacrosanct. It was like the Council had a target on his back or something, but he couldn't for the life of him figure out why. He hadn't killed a human in centuries. He didn't even feed from a live source anymore. It was all donated from blood banks that he paid handsomely in return. And yet he couldn't walk the streets most days without attracting the wrong kind of attention. He tried to figure out if it was because he was a day walker, something considered more dangerous than a normal vampire left to hunt in the dark, or if it was his age that made him more of a threat. He didn't know many vampires that lived past five to six hundred. He wasn't dangerous by any means. His house staff were all mortals and he hadn't touched any of them. Adele was always aggressive in her defense of his morals, but she wasn't here now to tell that to the hunter who apparently wanted him dead. Erik yanked the stake from his shoulder and threw it, knowing the hole would close eventually but right now he had to figure out his odds. He didn't like to kill, not even in self defense, but when angered, his strength could sometimes get away from him. Another hunter was closing in and though he sensed her fear as she got closer, he didn't know if she was helping this hunter or not. When everything happened, she jumped back, seemingly surprised but it could be an act. His blue eyes darted to her, watching as her hand held a stake of her own. That wasn't surprising. Most hunters with any kind of common sense would carry weapons, just in case. They were targets of the supernatural just as the supernatural were targets. But as their gazes met, he tried to read her, wanting to know if he needed to keep an eye on her or not. Surprisingly, she met his gaze only a moment before she put her hands up in neutrality, her hand loosening its hold on the stake. It could always be an act too but in this moment, he wanted to trust her. He gave a short nod, just something to acknowledge that she was no enemy and then he turned his narrowed gaze back to the other hunter, who had promptly shifted back into shadow. His movements were hard to track and Erik mentally cursed as he shifted his weight. He had to rely on his sense of smell since sight wasn't helping. It was only small ripples in the air that told of the hunter's presence otherwise. But he could smell the hunter so when the scent got stronger, he growled deep in his throat and waited for his moment. When it presented itself, the air rippling just to his right, he reacted like lightning, his hand darting around to wrap around seemingly air but then there was a grunting sound followed by gagging and the hunter materialized, his throat successfully surrounded by Erik's large hand. His eyes widened and locked on Erik's but not in fear. A sneer tugged at the hunter's lips as he lunged forward with another stake, aiming for Erik's chest this time. Erik grasped his wrist in his other hand, twisting till the man yelped and the stake fell from his grasp. He glared at Erik and Erik glared right back, his hand tightening just enough to make the man gasp and bring his own hands up, clutching at Erik's hand. "Why did you attack?" Erik asked in a growl. The hunter laughed. "Cause you were easy prey, man. All by your lonesome on a dark night in a park? How was I to know you weren't planning to drain the pretty girl?" He nudged his head toward the female hunter with what Erik had to assume he thought was a charming smirk. Erik rolled his eyes. "I'm sure she can handle herself." He muttered, glancing at her out of the side of his gaze to make sure of where she was still in case she'd changed her mind on getting involved. He certainly wasn't going to leave himself open to a second attack. Inwardly, he felt relief that it wasn't a mission putting the male hunter on his path. Of course, the guy could always be lying to protect the Council, but he seemed too arrogant for that. Erik pulled the man closer. "Go ahead, squeeze the life from me, blood sucker. That's all you're good for, right?" The hunter baited him, daring him with his eyes. Erik growled once more before tossing the man to the ground like a rag doll as he stepped back. "You're not worth it. Next time, you should really make sure your prey is, in fact, easy." He flashed a fang at the hunter once more before walking calmly back over to the bench to retrieve the paper that'd been thrown to the ground in the midst of everything. Meanwhile, the male hunter glanced at the woman, finally sensing what she was. "Hey, wanna team up? I bet we could take him." He whispered to her, nudging his head toward Erik's turned back as he bent over to get the paper. |
