He felt like he'd spoken more to Sam in the short time they knew each other than in the centuries he'd known his own brother sometimes. Troy could be a good listener but mostly he liked to plan things and was more a man of action that Kit ever was. He was impulsive too and all about charging into a situation rather than figuring things out beforehand. Kit felt more comfortable around Sam and loved how they could open up to each other, even practically being strangers. Yes, being parents was a huge step and he would have liked to do things a little differently given the choice but since it was already made for them, he was willing to accept it and go from there. If there was ever anyone he'd be comfortable with taking such a huge step with, he was glad it was Sam. She was down to earth and so smart. If anyone could handle the trials and tribulations of a fae birth, it was her. Plus it gave him an automatic excuse to spend more time with her and get to know her that much better. He was hoping by the time the baby decided to make its appearance, they would no longer be considered strangers to each other. The idea of Sam's powers was a new and surprising pleasant twist of things. He was exhilarated that she could feel emotions from the growing baby to know its needs and wants so early in life. He felt that should be a huge advantage if anything to keeping the pregnancy permanent and viable. It was like she could communicate with the baby and the very idea fascinated him. When it came to himself, he knew he should probably be freaking a little, or at least worried that she'd pry into his emotions or thoughts at the worst possible time, but he couldn't think about that right now. All he could think about is that he could show her so much more of himself so she could see they were good together without even saying a word. She could see his resolve to be there for her through this and beyond that. She could see that he was determined to make this work and be there for her and the baby. She would know without a doubt that she was all he ever thought about since their first time in the book store here then again in California. Kit was never a liar by default. In fact, he was a horrible liar growing up. He felt guilt like a burden on his shoulders from the moment he did something he knew he shouldn't and so he could never look someone in the eye and say anything less than the truth. Troy used to roll his eyes and try to lie for the both of them sometimes but Kit could never get away with it on his own. She admitted she was satisfied but terrified about everything else and he nodded gently. "That's understandable. When it gets too overwhelming and you feel like a meltdown's imminent, just remember you're not alone." He murmured the words, hoping to offer her some comfort, what he could, anyway. Sure, he wasn't the one who was going to be carrying the child and seeing all its emotions but maybe if she had someone to confide in through it all, she knew she could handle it that much better. She spoke next of her turning and he felt the shiver of anger under his skin like it was someone else inside him aching to get out and do some damage. He hated what was done to her and what made it worse, that she went to face her fears and they didn't even know who she was. He knew that must have been like a slap in the face for her, after being put through all that trauma to know that the people who did it to you didn't even remember your face. To know that she was so little to them, so beneath their radar, while they were her living nightmares. He ached for her and wished there was more he could do. "Well, I'm proud of you for going to face them. That must have been terrifying for you, but you did it. Hopefully, it made it easier for you to move on so they couldn't hold power over you anymore." He could only hope that was the case, his gaze gently searching her expression for confirmation one way or another. When she mentioned a winged fae, he felt like he'd been in a stupor and was jolted awake. All at once, his mind assaulted him with how he was supposed to be looking for his brother, his brother who had wings. He knew it was a slim chance and the fae she knew could be anyone but it was something and he had to follow it or he'd never know. Troy was always a sucker for a pretty face and he could totally see him falling for a girl like Sam. Plus they'd always had the same taste in women, eerily enough. Growing up, any time Kit started to crush on a girl, he'd soon enough find Troy flirting her up while he watched from afar, too shy to do the same. Troy used to tease him about getting a girlfriend and even tried to be the good brother sometimes and offer to hook him up with someone but Kit always choked up. He just wasn't good talking to girls. Now, books and other nerdy stuff....he could talk about that all day. Just not the stuff that actually made a girl like you. For a moment when he asked about the winged fae, Sam seemed distracted, as if her own thoughts were a million miles away. But finally she looked back at him and seemed to focus, even moving to a closer chair and he suddenly felt like his skin was on fire, just being so close to her. She said she felt the same and he let go of the breath he was holding in relief. He smiled at her, completely entranced as she finally confirmed that she met the winged fae around here and that it was a year or so ago, last she saw him. Kit felt his hopes fall a little. Troy could go so far in a year, if it was even him. But he had to follow the trail. When she told him he had no competition, Kit scowled and blinked for a minute, puzzlement on his features. But then it clicked into place and he actually laughed a little with a shake of his head. "Oh, no that's not why I was asking. Actually, I've been looking for someone for quite a while now and when you said winged fae, it made me think of him." His eyes twinkled a bit as he leaned in a little to whisper in her ear. It was tantalizing having her so close that he could breathe in her scent and know he could touch her without reaching far. "But it's nice to know I don't have to compete." Smirking as he pulled back, his face grew light hearted again as he explained. "I have a younger brother, you see. I have evidence to suggest he's here, or has been recently, but I have yet to find him. His name's Troy, and he has wings. Anything ring a bell?" |
