Beep...beep...beep
He snaps up in his bed and looks to the nightstand beside him, and of course, he forgot to plug in his phone, which leaves him to shuffle through the covers of his bed, feeling around for it. All the while, the incessant sound of the alarm ringtone doesn't quite. Finally, Benji is able to find it and slides his finger across his phone screen to silence the alarm. It was Thursday, and so that meant he didn't have class until later that afternoon, so he takes his time emerging from his cocoon of warm blankets, to cast his amber eyes gaze to the outside world. It was rainy, unfortunately, which meant the boy without a car was stuck to walking in wetness.
Bare feet make a quiet patter as he walks to the bathroom of his studio apartment, looks at himself in the mirror before splashing his face with ice cold water and drying it with a towel. His morning routine is essentially, the same as always, he brushes his teeth, combs his hair, even though it did always tend to look a little on the messy side, throws on a t-shirt and jeans before slipping his feet into his black vans with the frayed lacing.
About to leave, Benjamin grabs his phone and sees the indication of a message staring up at him. A half, crooked smile floats on his lips as he sees who it is. Caroline, his older sister, as always, has texted him a bible quote as she does every morning. Benji had never been big on religion, believing that he would make his own fate in this world, but Caroline would always shrug and just say it was something for him to think about throughout his day. Caroline was the epitome of perfect and Benji was thankful for her relationship. He knows he needs to go back and visit soon, but it was a long bus ride back to where she lives and going back there was never as satisfying as he would attempt to trick himself into. He texts her back with a quick 'thanks,' before throwing his laptop into backpack and shoving his arms into a rain coat. There was a coffee shop in another part of town, he had walked there before, besides, the rain was a mere light drizzle, he would be fine.
He walks with steady steps, avoiding puddles to not drench his footwear, knowing what a killer it is to have to sit in wet shoes all day in class. It made concentrating hard, and since he has Calc II today he really didn't want to be distracted. The sound of rain pattering against his hood echoes inside his ear drums and the noise is almost soothing in a way, it was consistent and droned out the hum of thoughts that were attempting to cross his mind. Up ahead, he spots a coffee shop that he had heard about, or at least seen enough of on Instagram. It wouldn't be a bad place to get some homework done and then hop on a bus to get to school.
As he enters the shop, Benji lowers his hood and reaches into his pocket to grab some money to get a coffee. He orders a small, no cream, no sugar, he drinks it black. A quiet place against the wall seemed like the perfect place to set up, so he pulls his laptop out of his backpack, plugs in some headphones and turns on the best rap song he can find as he attempts to do some practice problems his professor had emailed him a few days ago. Benji pulls a spiral notebook and a calculator from his bag as he begins to rove through them, hoping he can get them done before class today. He wouldn't have much time to study tonight, after he finished practice and made his commute back to his apartment. He thinks how much easier it would be to live on campus, but then he remembers how much it would cost how room and board were the only things not covered in his scholarship so he opted out. Besides, it gave him no temptation to go out and party like the rest of the Freshmen seemed to be doing. Drugs, alcohol, it wasn't his scene. He continues writing, occasionally glancing up when movement catches his amber gaze, or dropping his eyes to his phone whenever he gets a text, either from Caroline, or the group chat he was in for the team, but otherwise he remains focused, serious, somber, stern even. Benjamin was like a rainy day if it was a person. Perhaps, he needed some sunshine.
