Maybe something about Arlo reminded him of himself. After all, he'd hardly cared about what others thought all through his human life and it bled right into his first century as a vampire. He tortured people and tore apart families. He took what he wanted, when he wanted, because he wanted it. No one could talk sense into him, not even Stefan. He was a monster and he played the part. He used his manipulation power to get human arm candy any time he wanted then they would party and drink the night away. That is, until the humans ran out of blood. Then he would go on the hunt again. He didn't worry about hiding the bodies or anything at first. He had a few run ins with hunters and most of the time he came out on top but it wasn't without a price. He almost lost a few times and when Stefan tried to save him, it almost cost him his brother's life. Maybe that was when things started to come more into perspective. Maybe that was when he finally flipped the switch and decided to care a little. At least for a little while, before he went on a bender again. After that, it was pretty much down to Elena to sober him up for a while and then he had another bender and finally Isolt woke him up for the last time. Now he knew how to cover up his messes and keep the hunters off his back, well, mostly. He felt that he needed to show Arlo how to do the same, for his own sake. Maybe he would become like a mentor of sorts to Arlo but it wasn't like he was signing up to be his father figure or anything like that. No, screw that. He just wanted to help Arlo keep his head so he would survive a little longer. Then maybe Damon could use him for the good of the coven. It made sense, right? He warned him about staying aware when feeding and he could see Arlo bristling but he took it as a good thing because it meant Arlo was listening. Maybe he didn't like what he was hearing but either way, he was listening and probably knew Damon was right. Finally he admitted as such and Damon only smirked back in response. When he said that someone had told him he would grow out of the whole hunger control thing, Damon could only chuckle. Someone had lied their ass off to him. He wanted to tell Arlo he wasn't a newborn puppy growing up and learning new habits. He was a different kind of animal, one that could only teach himself new tricks. No one else could do it for him. He alone had to learn how to utilize his talents and learn how to survive, otherwise he wouldn't. Simple as that. He smirked when Arlo said being a vampire wasn't all it was cracked up to be. "It can be the greatest thing that ever happened to you, but only if you let it." When Arlo asked about a ride home, Damon felt it only right to tease him about teleporting and Arlo admitted that he liked his car. Damon chuckled and nodded. "It is." He agreed as he headed toward the exit. They got in the car and he noted the way Arlo looked around himself as if satisfied with being here, as if he was already making plans to be in a car like this himself some day. If he truly accepted what he was and started using his powers for things besides hunting, Damon could definitely see that happening some day. He turned his head to Arlo as he thanked him for everything and said he would leave the tavern alone. Then he asked about vampires giving him trouble and Damon nodded. "I'm sure something like that could be arranged." He said with a gleam in his eyes as he started the car and pulled out into the road. Then Arlo asked about a job and he tilted his head a little, considering. "Well if you think you have any customer service skills under your sleeve, then I could let Isolt know to call you up for an interview. We could always use a new bartender or waitor for Red on the Water." |
