![]() I had been surprised when Davante had suggested going to see a performance downtown in the city together. I'm not sure why it surprised me, as he often had enjoyed musical performances but my brother had planned an evening to spend with me and it had delighted me to no end. We had found a small restaurant to have dinner before the concert, sharing a bottle of a wine that was too expensive for me. My brother had laughed it off, in some kind of good spirit I hadn't seen him exist in for far too long. With a charismatic smile, he had infected me with that good mood and we spent the evening laughing at the other patrons before sitting in a corner of the balcony of the concert so we could talk about the music and not disturb anyone else, though I knew without a doubt that he wouldn't care if we disturbed anyone. There was something ethereal about him that night, emanating in a way I hadn't experienced since we were younger, and with that, there was nothing I could do except for accept it and feed into it as much as I could. When the concert finished, he had somehow brandished all propriety aside and we'd laughed our buzzes away once we stepped out into the frigid night. Ever the astonishing gentleman, he stood closely to me as we walked to allow some kind of warmth to wash over me as the inner warmth from the alcohol faded. We had a long walk home, but I had insisted we walk instead of take a care as to see more of the city considering I had yet to say my stay in the city was lengthy by any means. Obliging me, Davante had participated with a good sense of humor though he had surely warned me of the frigid temperatures once the sun went down. And me? I had laughed it off, thinking that the cold wasn't going to be as bitter as it was. Offering the knowledge of a shortcut, Davante began to steer me down a side street when I could feel the muscles in his arms grow tense and his jawline clench at something I couldn't yet sense. "What's wrong?" I'd asked softly, tilting my head to study the features of his face I had grown accustomed to scrutinizing. When he didn't answer, I tried to locate the source of his distraction when my ears were greeted with the increasing volume of heinous, partially muted screams. They were masculine, obviously, which led me to believe that my brother would pay them little to no mind but something else had clearly struck him; he looked down, and then to me briefly. It was easy to understand his look for his blue eyes held concern that he often entrusted to me or Finley, and little others. "C'mon," I agreed, following him towards the source of the sounds. When he cursed softly beside me, my brows furrowed in concern for him, until I realized the curse was directed at the shadow suddenly darting down the road, drawing itself up to a much larger stature before creeping around the corner in an almost humorous fashion. To stifle my giggle, I bit my tongue and began to focus my energy on the light that was bubbling beneath my skin. It was almost exciting, honestly, to think about using my powers beside my brother who was infinitely more powerful than I... it was exhilarating all the same. The soft, feminine voice crying a plea for the men to leave her alone had Davante's brows furrow, and his eyes narrow much like mine had. His walk was brisk, though his Shadow had drawn itself up to monstrous height as if attempting to be intimidating more than the man himself. "That's enough." Davante's words were cause enough for the men to look up, despite whatever the young girl was doing to them. With a gentle rumble beneath our little group's location alone, he was warning them to leave. From my own body, a burst of light would illuminate the area so he could follow the men, and I could tend to the girl who had collapsed on the street. The light would be able to help heal her if I focused strongly enough, and if she'd let me. Davante and his illusive shadow disappeared into the dark after the men, I knew only he would return and I would be able to soothe him later. For now, my efforts were focused on the young woman whom I crouched beside, very gently letting my long fingers touch her back. "Please, let me help you... I can make the pain stop..." |
