East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

How does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?

I inhale, stifling a rare cough from the sudden rush of the cigarette's smoke down my windpipe, the sensation heightened by the crisp evening air. The inkling of autumn is upon us. The weather is cooling down, but it isn't frigid enough to be dangerous just yet. It's colorful, usually. Or at least it was back in 'sota. People changed too, if only temporarily. As the trees shed their leaves, the farm town folk were able to shed their skin, taking a breather before the snow came and crops turned over. Everything seemed kinder, calmer, a step away from the rough looks and long nights that defined my hardened roots. That place seems like a fairy tale to me now. Something I read about only in books.

I'm waiting for this drunken haze to lift, for the nicotine to sober me, if only temporarily, before I look at the woman next to me again. I'm afraid I'll see her face again in this stranger. It happens sometimes when I reach an incredible level of inebriation. It's happened a couple of times since I left New York. It was the most vivid, the most torturous the night I became a hunter. I could have sworn I wasn't that drunk yet tonight, but what the hell do I know. Her figure is the same. Her face, her hair. Even her voice. But this couldn't be Fire. This world was a cruel kick in the gut most days, but it wasn't wretched enough to put us both here right now, me too drunk and too sweaty to explain myself.

I finally find some courage and stand tall, brown, bloodshot eyes looking directly at her. "Lyrica." I manage to grunt, my hand on my forehead now, wiping away the beads of salty moisture that pimple there. Something about her was different. She's changed, or maybe I have. But something else is there within her, a piece of her I haven't seen before. I'm staring hard at her now, too hard. I realize and look away. It's the same sense I get when a vampire turns a corner or a shifter scampers across my path in the suburbs. She's not human.

It's been too long since she's talked and I still haven't said anything but her name. The drag on my cigarette is going to go out. I raise it to my lips and puff hard a few times, reviving it. "I live here," I say blowing a hot exhale out into the air between us. It evaporates quickly. I want to know if she lives here too, but don't ask. At least not yet. Would that impact my decision to stay? Sancrosanct was a god damn hellmouth. Whatever was hot and bubbling under the surface of this city was damn evil, or why else would there be so many motherfuckers for me to hunt here? Something strange shifts in my gut and I find myself feeling guilty for worrying if she's a part of it all -- of whatever strange world operates here. "Still dancing, Fire?"
