The streets are sunny and the breeze is forgiving today as I practically skip toward the cafe. I know that Alexander won't be there but I still look forward to my shift as always. Thejob has gotten easier now that I've worked there for a few weeks. I've started learning the different kinds of coffee and how to abbreviate them on the cups so the other baristas know what to make. I'm getting better with talking to the customers too. I remember to smile like Alexander says all too often when he's there and it seems to bring out the better nature in most humans. There are still the impatient ones that are rude no matter what but I smile through it and take their orders as quickly as possible but also being sure to be efficient since it seems I still mess up if I try to be too quick and miss something.
I clock in and start my shift, knowing the eight hours will go by pretty quick since noon time tends to be our busiest. Funny how it's a coffee cafe and yet afternoon seems to bring the biffest crowd. True, the cafe serves some meals and snacks too but mostly it's known for the coffee and hot chocolate. I've also dabbled in learning some of the recipes for making the hot chocolate and coffee but I usually just burn myself so Alexander says we'll be extra slow in that. Instead I mostly take orders.
The afternoon has business picking up and we move right through the lunch hour. Before I know it, I'm in my last hour and actually regretting that I'll have to go home soon. I never want to leave this place. But then a familiar head of hair walks in the cafe and I'm squinting across the counter, trying to see if I'm seeing things. I can't stand it anymore so after about fifteen minutes and being distracted staring across the cafe at the back of her head, I walk across to the table. "Nadya?" I call out softly.
