The afternoon sun beats down on my dark hair as I walk toward the shade of the trees that line the park. I've only just discovered the sanctity of Hyde Place a few days ago but it's easily become one of my favorite places in town to visit. The air smells fresh and wild out here. It smells more like home. I close my eyes, pausing a moment to breathe in and out a few times. A smile lifts my lips as I re-open my eyes and continue walking down the cobble path. Once I'm in the shade of the trees, I stop and lean against the trunk of the tree, leaning my head back against it as I let out a sigh. I look up when I hear a child's giggle, watching the kid yell at his mom from the monkey bars at the playground. She looks up from her phone for barely a minute before before glancing back down at the kid goes back to yelling at him to "look at me, look at me!" Suddenly his hand slips and I gasp in fear, automatically reaching out with my gift to envelope him in an invisible shield as he falls to the hard ground. He lands with a soft thud, his eyes wide open and his mouth parted but no scream comes. He stares at his mom as she runs toward him, only to stop mid step when she hits my shield. She screams now, looking around and our eyes lock. I drop my shield instantly, shrinking back against the tree as she races to her child and scoops him up, covering him with her arm as she runs the opposite direction with more than a few suspicious glances in my direction. Guess I'm a freak again. Once she's gone, I let out the breath I didn't even know I was holding and let my body slowly slide down the tree trunk , plopping down on my butt as I lean my head back and close my eyes again. ![]() |
