The southern part of the city has a chic family-oriented sort of charm to it. Here, small locally owned shops run rampant, neighbors often know each other by name, and the monthly socials are an event not to be missed. In the South, children can often be seen safely playing in the park or on sidewalks and in the weekends, families often take to the beach to enjoy the warm waters surrounding the city.

Beyond the city limits and over the bridge lies the deep, dark, and almost impenetrable forest. Often seen as a way to guard this magical city against the world that surrounds it, many are entirely ignorant of the evil that may creep between those tree trunks. Many were-creatures use the forest for the transformations of their newest members and some even take to hunting here. It isn't particularly peculiar for people to go missing within this forest but once you get through, the rest of the world awaits.

As the trickle of white became a steady fall, and the soot like covering on the ground gently became a blanket of snow, it struck me that perhaps it was time to leave the park and journey on the long walk home before the snow became thicker and the temperatures dropped in the darkness of night that was sure to fall soon enough. Though it had been a quiet afternoon and early evening, I found myself wishing that there had been some form of interaction in the park that might have drawn my attention, the Polaroid camera sitting untouched beside me as my eyes, instead of the lens, took in the park. While there was enough beauty in the physical landscape of the park to capture on film and in picture, somehow it was lack luster in that there was nothing extraordinary about the rusted fence, the average tree-line, and the all too seedy aura of the place. At one point, I might have enjoyed capturing the seedy visual on camera, happily documenting whatever kind of dark interactions I might find occurring. But now? I had been wanting some kind of beautiful in hopes that the still pictures could become the life of the bare walls in my new apartment. There were all sorts of ordinary sounds trickling out of the forest, but a rustle that was increasing at a steady rate drew my attention quickly. Little did I understand the struggle for life that would occur moments later, as all I heard was the sudden crunch of snow as a dark shape loomed in the not so distant field that lay beyond the bench I had taken up residence on. A short moment later saw my fingers smoothly reach for the camera and lift it to my eye, searching for the appropriate timing to take the shot of whatever predator had caught the - ... The squeal of the prey was enough to give me goose bumps, signifying that whatever the predator, it was hungry. When the shape became more definite and identifiable, my breath slowed as if attempting to make me invisible so the wolf would pay me no mind. The click of the camera was the only sound I would make, the sound of the picture printing a low hum that I was sure the wolf would be able to hear with it's keen instincts and senses. After another picture or two, when the fantastical creature was documented on my camera and I was sure it would be distracted by it's dinner, I stood with as much fluid, quiet motion as I could in an attempt to keep from disturbing the creature. Little had it occurred to me that the creature at the other end of the field might have been a were animal. I wasn't yet used to thinking of all creatures as potentially part human, with instincts enough to understand human action and thought. Wasn't it better to treat them all as if they would harm me? Self-preservation was important, and decidedly on this fact I took quicker steps to propel myself out of the park speedily. Hesitantly would I look over my shoulder, finding anxiety bubbling in my stomach at the idea that the creature might have begun to follow me. With that in mind, I sighed, trying to focus my attention on using that anxiety to create a small bubble of light around myself to illuminate a very short radius so I might repel a creature who preferred the night. "Oh, please be enjoying your dinner." |
