It is a silent morning. No one inside the small studio apartment stirs, the only movement that can be seen is the occasional flicker of sunlight that streams in through the slates in the windows as something moves passed the rays of sunshine that fall into the apartment. The only sound is the quiet breathing of the young man who lives in this studio apartment all alone. He slumbers, the first time in a while that he has not constantly tossed and turned. Call it being over tired, but Benjamin called it finally being able to sleep. Perhaps there is an occasional twitch of one of his fingers, or one of his toes, but for the most part, Benjamin slumbers unmoving.
Until he no longer is.
The young man jerks awake, throwing the blanket from his body and reaching over to grab his phone, pressing his thumb against the home button to allow the time to pop up on the screen. HIs heart races as he notices that the time is 9:53. He had missed his first class. Benji had never missed a class before. But then those amber eyes shift downwards and notice the date. It wasn't Friday, Friday was yesterday and today was Saturday. Throwing his phone down next to him, Benjamin collapses onto his bed, falling into his own stupidity. All that panic for nothing.
He closes his eyes for a moment, imagining that maybe he would be able to fall back asleep again. Maybe he could sleep the day away, something he hasn't done in a very long time, due to constant classes, homework, and soccer practices. Quickly after shutting those piercing amber eyes behind tanned lids, Benjamin opens them once more, knowing attempting to sleep for an entire day was simply futile.
Rocking forwards, Benjamin finally exits the warm and comfortable confines of his bed and stands up. Limbs stretch upwards as he brings life into his body, curving his back as a yawn is expelled from his mouth. Muscles flex and stretch. He ruffles his hair, more out of habit than anything, for attempting to tame his dark locks was not an easily obtained task. Ever since childhood, Benji has struggled with keeping his hair neat. He remembers hi mother constantly wetting a comb and trying to make it lie flat, but every attempt just seemed to make his hair messier than before.
Bare feet against hardwood make a soft pattering sound as Benji moves about in his small studio apartment, making his way to bathroom. Amber eyes meet the amber eyes reflected in the mirror as he bends over the sink to splash some water onto his tanned face. Grabbing a towel from its hook, he pats hi face dry before opening the medicine cabinet and taking out his toothbrush and toothpaste. As he brushes his teeth, he thinks about what maybe he ought to do today. The majority of his homework was done, and there was no practice nor a game today. Benjamin rinses and wipes his mouth before exiting the bathroom, amber gaze falling upon the leather journal on his night stand. Perhaps he could write today. Sun streams in through his windows. Yes, today would be a good day for writing.
Opening the small wardrobe which served as his closet, Benjamin pulls out a black v-neck t-shirt and throws it over his bare upper body. He then proceeds to open the bottom drawer and pull out a pair of dark skinny jeans, ending the ensemble with his black, frayed vans. A typical outfit for Benjamin. Especially on a Saturday when he knew he wouldn't have to impress any of his professors he may later need a reference from for med school.
Journal and a few pens gets thrown into his backpack for ease of carrying and in case he needed to take the bus later today. He moves into the kitchen with slow steps, not in any hurry. Benji skips breakfast as usual and opts for just a cup of black coffee from the Keurig that Caroline had bought him. To go cup is removed from the cupboard as the dark liquid rushes forth, steaming upon entry into the cup. Leaving his coffee black, as per usual, he places the cap on top, ensuring his coffee would be transported without any spills. A banana and a protein bar are thrown on top of the journal in his backpack, knowing, as such with any young male, that Benjamin would certainly be hungry later, long after the coffee would be drained from his cup.
Just as he is about to head out the door, he remembers the words from his mom, and how she would never let him leave the house without a jacket. Grumbling under his breath, Benji grabs his dark green hoodie from behind the door and thrust his arms into it, leaving the hoodie unzipped and he walks out the door, locking it behind him.
He steps out into the world and picks a direction before starting to walk. The city is abuzz with Saturday. Families hustling from one activity to another, kids playing. Benjamin, though briefly, thinks of his childhood for a moment. It probably was not like the majority of the people who call Sacrosanct home. But, Benjamin hated dwelling so he shakes the thoughts from his mind, instead reaching into his pocket to grab his ever buzzing phone. Between Blake and Logan, Caroline, study groups, and soccer teammates, it was a rarity to see his phone not full of text messages. Unlocking the screen with his thumbprint, he does not respond to the messages sent to him, instead he starts a new one, to Beylani, the cute blonde he had meet a little while ago. The message is simple. 'Hey.'
Well, he certainly is a man of few words.
It is then when he looks up from his phone that he realizes he was not in the vibrant city anymore, as ware houses surround him. Benjamin has not been to this part of town before. Amber eyes look around, holding both confusion at where exactly he was, but also a mild excitement about being in a new place. Just thinking perhaps he could find a bench, or even a small grassy area to sit in in order to write. He sows his pace, eyes glancing back and forth, not wanting to miss any sitting area.
Then he is distracted.
A high pitched wine is heard, it echoes off the cement walls. Eyes of honeyed amber narrow in suspicion at the sound. What the heck was that? he thinks. The whine happens again and this time, it is accompanied by a small bark. The sound continues, allowing for Benjamin to find his way to the source, which by now he has figured must be a dog. (Or perhaps a very strange cat.) Making his way over to one of the abandoned buildings, he pushes passed the broken, wooden doorway, and looks down to a pile of rubble and trash inside the main entrance way. The young man kneels down and reaches out to pick away at the rubbish, when a growl snaps back at him. Immediately, he retreats his hand, but as he listens to the whining begin again, a thought strikes him that perhaps the poor thing was hurt. Ignoring the growl he begins to dig through all the trash and old brick to reveal a small puppy sitting on the other side, covered in dirt. Upon seeing Benjamin's face, the puppy's growl quickly turns into a yip of gratitude. He allows the puppy to sniff his fingers, which the young dog then quickly begins licking. Benjamin laughs at the pleasant yet foreign feeling, retracting his hand. Standing up, he turns to exit the building, maybe the dog's owner was out around the street some where. The dog quickly leaps over the rubbish and follows him out, yipping excitedly as puppies will do. Amber eyes glance down to meet the dog's own. "Umm ok, guess you're coming too," he says shrugging as he exits.
The young man with dark locks and amber eyes gets a good look at the puppy for the first time. He sees it's a girl, she is a reddish orange color, with white on her belly and her paws. She doesn't have a tail, he notes with a laugh. And for the first time he notices her eyes, one is dark brown and gentle, while the other is blue and playful. Benjamin lacks experience with dogs so he isn't sure what breed she is. Maybe her owner would know. "Hey!" He yells out. "Did anyone lose a dog?" He shouts. While listening for a response, the man bends down and inspects the puppy for any sign of a collar or identification, finding none.
And then, for a moment, he really hopes no one says the dog was theirs.
Because he thinks, maybe it could be his.
