The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

He was stuck in a state of shock, watching her head slowly turn when she heard her name. He face came into view and then she said his name, standing as if she wanted to come to him and yet she didn't move once she was out of her chair. It must have been something on his face that stopped her. He searched her face, as if trying to make sure it really was her. Could he be seeing things? Surely that human lady in the book store didn't slip him something without him knowing or spray something in the air that would make him halucinate, right? Yet he couldn't believe what he was seeing right now. Could she have really returned? It wasn't like he'd been out searching for her any time recently but he still felt his chest twist with an ache that he'd thought was over with years ago. Sam had been one of the first fae's he'd come into contact with in Sacrosanct, save for Dorian. He'd connected with her that first night on the beach and their friendship had only blossomed further the more time they spent together. When she lost her Were boyfriend, he'd been her shoulder to cry on and then the one trying to cheer her up and get her out of the house, anything to life her spirits just so he could see her smile again. When he'd found the house empty, it had felt like she'd taken a part of him with her. He'd only recently taken her offer of joining her Court, even though he'd sworn them off. Something about her had drawn him in and made him change his mind, only to feel abandoned in the end. He didn't hate her for it or anything. He couldn't, even if he wanted to. The pain had left him a husk for a while and only his friendship with Dorian had helped stem the tide. He couldn't help but wonder if she'd thought about him at all when she was gone. Was she still too torn up in her grief to really think about the people she was leaving behind or did she hate herself more than anyone else ever could for what she'd done and that was why she'd hesitated in seeking him out? He wondered if Dorian knew she was back, if they'd spoken yet. He wouldn't push or pry but the silent questions were there in his eyes anyway. Where was she? Why didn't she come back? Why didn't she at least call and let him know she was safe? He'd have driven to her in a heartbeat, hung out with her wherever she wanted to go. He was a goner for her even then when he'd held her to his chest and let her cry her eyes out over another man. But she'd left without saying good bye and never made a try to contact him or Dorian or anyone to let them know whether she was even alive or dead. He'd finally moved on and found his other half in Amelia, but he would never get back the piece that Sam stole. She looked genuinely happy to see him, the smile too quick to her lips, too natural looking to be anything but genuine. She told him it was nice to see him and he could only think to whisper back. "Is it?" His voice came out hoarse, his eyes showing the hurt that he'd been holding back all these years because he'd only felt fear that something had happened to her. A part of him even now didn't want to hurt her and he knew she'd only blame herself. She probably already was even before he said anything. Finally he took a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair, messing up his spikes as he looked back up at her. "I didn't know whether you were alive or dead." His voice came out soft and sad, not angry or even like he was accusing her, just stating facts. |
