East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

Ain't No Rest for the Wicked

Deliberately, I lifted my own cigarette to my lips as if to allow the smoke to wash any remembrance of how Cormac's lips tasted away. The acrid smoke did its job, removing any faint traces of whiskey and masculine musk I could feel on my own lips â€" they now felt raw. Raw emotionally, brutal and unable to ignore. I ran my tongue over my lips, tasting the hint of spice the tobacco left and I sighed as if it was exhausting to be looking at him. I could have walked away; I could have pretended I didn't see him. And yet... Here I was, offering him a cigarette when he didn't have one, and when he was obviously facing demons I didn't have any business mingling with.

I'd been alive centuries longer than Cormac had ever known... had ever imagined I was. Older than the turn of the millennium, older than the world wars, older than the discovery of the country we resided in. I'd helped write history, he'd read it. I knew knights, I knew kings. I'd traveled the world, finding secrets in it's corners. What business did I have trying to vie for the attention of a mere... boy?

Right. It was in the nights we'd spent lying together, limbs tangled like a ball of yarn â€" unable to guess where one started and the other ended. My reason lay in the cradle of memories of how he was an intimate companion when I needed comfort and company. The business I had with Cormac would remain unfinished if I'd ignored him in that alley, if I'd walked away without offering him a cigarette. Instead, I'd done what my impulsiveness had led me to; my fingers brandished the cigarette like it was a white flag. Throwing caution and my doubts to the wind, I found a smug relief filling me when the man needed me to light the cigarette for him. I was always in control, always one hand above, always having something to offer him.

"Tsk tsk, Cormac. Pretty girls don't light cigarettes."

Though I'd admonished him for needing a lighter, I offered him the one that had been seated in my back pocket ready for use. When his smoke joins mine, tangling and rising with ethereal ease do I allow my gaze to rest on him with a heaviness he'd all but have to feel. Unhurried, the gaze beckoned him for some explanation; the demand for answers in my expression left no need for words. And yet, I felt gracious enough to grant him some mercy and keep him from guessing what I wanted.

"What are you doing here?"
