I had heard some noise earlier as I came up to the fence and had thought it was stray dogs or maybe a cat or raccoon trying to get some garbage. I hadn't thought about the panther making so much noise to try to lure the human out of his house. If I had thought of it, maybe I wouldn't have ventured so close to the fence and tried my hand at communicating with the bulldog on the other side. Of course that was to no avail and now I find myself staring down the barrel of a shotgun and I can tell by the look in the man's eyes that he's not afraid to shoot.

When I hear the roar, I turn my head in unison with the man, both staring at the panther perched on the fence in shock, though I'm sure the man's shock was much more so than my own. I hear the barking of the dog go crazy, probably thinking it just the biggest house cat he's ever seen before. The man gulps and I can see the indecision on his features. Shoot the mangy coyote or take out the prize panther to hang on his wall? Of course he knows what will do the most damage and what would give him more bragging rights so when the man starts to turn the gun toward the panther, I make a move.

Rushing forward without warning, I grab the man's calf muscle in my jaws and clamp down then twist, feeling the bone shatter and break. The man screams out and the gun barrel swings upward to the sky, blaring as he releases the bullet to the clouds overhead. My ears clamp to my head at the loud angry noise and I snarl as I jump back and glance once at the panther before I take off, figuring he'll be following. "Only if you think you can keep up." I find myself sending back to him. I'm actually surprised to find it easier to do this time around. Maybe because I've been practicing?

I race downt he street, zigzagging through trash cans and even cars when they start racing past, blowing their horns and yelling out the window. I can only imagine what they think of a coyote running down the road, let alone a panther. Finally I veer off between houses and into the woods, feeling more at ease the moment I pass the first few feet of trees. When I know the man's not following and hasn't sicked his dog on us, I slow down and finally stop altogether, turning back to face the panther. "What were you doing there? Why did you distract him? I had it covered." Indignation growls in my voice as I stare at him.
