South

The southern part of the city has a chic family-oriented sort of charm to it. Here, small locally owned shops run rampant, neighbors often know each other by name, and the monthly socials are an event not to be missed. In the South, children can often be seen safely playing in the park or on sidewalks and in the weekends, families often take to the beach to enjoy the warm waters surrounding the city.

South
all this devotion was rushing over me, and the crashes are heaven, for a sinner like me, but the arms of the ocean deliver me.

I had a dire necessity for a breath of fresh air. Never before had I been surrounded by such a plethora of concrete giants, filled with horrors that would never have crossed my path in the world I grew up in. The buildings that had encased our occasionally paved streets would never have loomed so tall, and they would have never been so full. The people there weren't educated long enough to hold successful, empowering jobs that those of this city could hold with an ease that I never truly imagined possible until setting foot on American soil. There was a wilderness that permeated my home in a way that this suburban environment didn't know, couldn't know, and not for lack of trying. They attempted some semblance of the wild with parks and nature reserves, but there was nothing like the freedom of watching the ocean kissing the shores with some kind of love, blossoming greater with the rush of the tides.

Naturally, I missed home but more than anything, I missed the way the air tasted laden with salt. The harbor, here, did nothing for me. While I wanted to enjoy the scenery, I couldn't find it in myself to fall in love with the shore the way my heart belonged to the azure waters I grew up with. Instead, I tried to teach my heart to fall in love with the trees and the forest, seeking solace in the resident silence of the southern part of town. Davante had tried to dissuade me from wandering there, attempting to feed me stories riddled with ludicrous tales of drugs and seedy individuals and while I believed him, the lure of what other mysterious things might live in the woods had piqued my interest.

Bundled in clothes thicker than my liking, I had made an adventure of the day by having breakfast and coffee in a small café I had begun to frequent. After exploring the east side of the city, I had bought a loaf of bread to feed to the ducks at the park and while I'm sure they had left to other places for the winter, perhaps some kind of animal could benefit from my curiosity. With little else to strike my fancy, I had found myself in the southern most part of the city. There were little to no others in the park as the snow was falling at a gentle rate, but it was cold enough to keep most indoors and away from what most considered fair weathered fun. There had never been anything like this in Georgia, not even in Africa... The lure of the forest was almost hypnotic. Who was I to say no to great Mother nature?

The perimeter of the park was enough of a proverbial fence that I didn't venture into the actual woods, but instead found a secluded vantage point at the very, very edge of Hyde park to sit down on and scrutinize the scenery. With an old polaroid camera in hand, I began what would surely be a short in length photography session of the white wonderland that no one seemed to appreciate.
