The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

I have a feeling this girl will never have enough questions about my kind. Any other kind, for that matter. She's been too sheltered all her life, too blind to the world around her. She probably has no idea what other creatures are close to her. If she goes to school here, she'll be class mates with Were's and vampires and witches. She'll have teachers of other kinds, friends of other kinds, rivals. The list goes on. Sacrosanct has become a melting pot of the supernatural and she's been tossed in like newly grained rice. Now the question is, will she remain blind to her surroundings or will she start to notice the subtle tell tale signs that all is not normal in her world? I'm actually curious to find out. She frowns at me as I dunk my biscuit, probably thinking I'm just a walking bad manner but fortunately for me, I could care less what others think of my manners. I keep some, I lose some. We can't all be keepers. I continue to do it, just to watch her face crinkle up. Oh yes, I do enjoy playing games. She finally chills out some with a grin before nibbling on her own biscuit. She seems to be growing a little more comfortable around me so I count that as a small victory. Her cheeks redden at one point, causing my brow to quirk up but I make no comment, not wanting to embarrass her any further. I'm only intrigued to know what could have caused such a blush. She lifts her cup to her lips, taking a polite sip before setting it down while I continue to dunk my biscuit till it's gone. Only then do I lift the cup to my lips and drink, taking small sips myself since coffee's never been my thing. She perks up at the mention of military, asking about wars and I smirk. "If you count the fight between the North and South as a war, then yes, I have been in a war. Singular, mind you. I got my taste for it and never wanted seconds." My brow furrows as I have a momentary flash back of the Civil War. I fought for the South of course. My father owned slaves and believed we should fight to keep them under our charge. Most of our slaves were okay with the notion as well, matter of fact. They were afraid to be free because this is the only life they knew and they were provided for, quite well, I might add. They had shelter and clothing and food and they never went without. Our slaves weren't beaten and starved. They were pampered and treated to momentary comforts to keep them loyal. Father thought it only right that the elder son go into the military while the younger stayed back to guard the homestead, in case I didn't return, of course. I didn't hear Derrek complaining any, of course. When I mention Ceara's job offer, she wrinkles her nose, bringing up Syn. I tilt my head somewhat at the mention of a panther and leopard, wondering if the leopard wouldn't be that dark haired boy I met on my first night in Sacrosanct. I brush the thought away moments later though. I shake my head. "No, The Voodoo Room, actually. I know the owner. Of course, I've met the owner of Syn too and she's certainly not one you'd like to run into in a dark alley. Consider that a fair warning. I would advise you and your friends stay away from that place entirely, unless you like the idea of becoming someone's meal." My eyes glisten seriously, wanting her to know that in this, I'm not teasing. I don't know why I care particularly, but I do. She shouldn't be around Syn. At least, that's my opinion. I'd hate to see her drained on a sidewalk outside. I know the vampires are less shy there. They're just as likely to coax you into a dark corner and take what they want. Syn is a lot less controlled than The Voodoo Room. In my darker moods, I don't mind seeing the dancing and the feeding but on most nights, I enjoy having some classier company. She seems almost flustered by her own statement, turning to her cup as if she needs to distract herself before she looks back up. I offer a smirk of patience and amusement as she tells me that she has a question and then I'm free to go. I can't help but chuckle as I lean back in my chair. "You may ask your question, but I didn't think I was being held captive here, nor do I think you requested for me to save you." She waits a moment before speaking her mind. My lip quirks again before I boldly hold out my hand, palm up, across the table. I lean forward a little, a dare in my gleaming eyes. "I don't know...do you dare to find out?" |
