The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

Dorian wasn't the first to ask him about his love life, and given the fact that as a local politician, Dareios was in fact somewhat of a pseudo celebrity, the Fae King would not be the last to inquire about it. They had just reached the basement when Dorian posed the question, digging deeper into the vampire's life at home in his immaculate and rather large, old mansion he kept just for himself. Dareios turned back to face his friend as he leaned against a heavy chested drawer, drawing his arms to fold over his chest as he contemplated a thoughtful answer. "No wife." He confirmed nonchalantly, a grin gathering across his features as he listened to Dorian's take on the modern new role of women in these current times. He nodded in agreement and understanding. "Yes, and as a good Irish Catholic farm boy, my parents would be appalled if they were still in this world, to see me without one." He said causally and playfully, followed by a quick laugh. "There have been a few who've caught my eye. But alas, I'm too busy for most of that nonsense." He dismissed quickly. The vampire, though charming and handsome, had not been on a proper date in some time. Occasionally his publicist would make him court an equally rich young woman in town just for the photo opportunities and columns that came in the gossip pages. But the night would routinely end with him taking her home, perhaps with a cold kiss on her cheek. There had been Sorcha, a pretty young woman he'd asked out in earnest effort. But per usual, his interest waned and he hadn't seen the curious witch in many months. It had been so long since Dareios had been peculiar enough about a person to want to date them. This was strange on many fronts. The first being that Dareios, by nature, was a social creature. He was incredibly loyal to the allies in his keep, and was naturally quite good at making friends. It was in some ways, a bit of a sport for him. It was an unquenchable curiosity. After the hundreds of years he'd spent on this earth, it was perhaps the one thing that he seemingly could not predict. People were so vastly different from one another. While traits and tastes can be similar sometimes, history and culture and connection were wildly individual. Dareios found how it all mixed together to be fascinating. Nevertheless, the vampire was rather adept at walling himself off to others. He was polite and charming, so it was easy to play the part of a good listener and divert these friends from asking too many questions about himself. He had loved before. But Aisling was a long time ago. The experience was too, well, intense and messy, and had some lingering consequences that still kept Dareios up at night (so to speak). So he never sought out that kind of deep, emotional connection again. He hasn't seen Aisling since -- Jesus, the start of the first World War. It was a tumultuous time, of course, but their split was intentional. He was a vampire living among humans at a time where his kind were nothing more than childish folk lore. The supernatural community back then barely existed in developed countries, where mass hysteria over something so foreign could evoke irreputable consequences. Dareios had loved her. Whatever void was left behind in his chilling, undead carcass longed for her, even now, a century later. She was dead, he knew, her remains having returned to the earth from which she came long ago. For some time he cursed himself for not turning her. But he also knew she was never meant to carry this burden. She wasn't meant for this life. Aisling had been better. Pure. Despite his hard-in-place discipline over his more predatory instincts, Dareios, too, could not trust himself without a doubt that he wouldn't hurt someone else again one day. He had hurt many, and for many years, before he was able to refine himself to the version most see today. It was a constant struggle, one he would forever be embattled with. Be it human or fae or whatever else, there was always risk, especially when both sides of the equation let their guards down. The vampire sipped from his glass now, his beady eyes transfixed on his new friend as Dorian listed off his many properties in Italy. "Impressive." Dareios said with the gentle nod of his head, and sipped some more. When his new friend extended an invitation to his wedding, Dareios quite quickly lit up, his thin eyebrows raised and a smile spreading from ear to ear. "I wouldn't miss it. Thank you, for the invitation." He said genuinely, taking a step forward to pat his friend on the shoulder. "This meas I'll have to meet your beau before the big day, though." He added. Their shared attention returns to the piece of furniture in question. Dareios moves slowly around it, looking over every detail. It was a new piece to their collection, and clearly could use a bit more of Aaron's touch in terms of refurbishment. But Dorian clearly have a tasteful eye. It was a handsome piece. But the vampire stopped dead in his tracks when Dorian's story revealed some truly illuminating connections. "Leonardo Da Vinci. Are you serious?" He asked bluntly, his jaw nearly dropping to the floor. "Ha! How remarkable." He said in a tone that suggested he almost didn't believe it. "So you like it?" He asked, as he ran a finger along the length of the top of the chest. "It's yours. Consider it an early wedding present. But please, let my staff clean it up a little. They're the best at restoring pieces so old." Dareios Auerbach | Vampire | Vinyl |
