South

The southern part of the city has a chic family-oriented sort of charm to it. Here, small locally owned shops run rampant, neighbors often know each other by name, and the monthly socials are an event not to be missed. In the South, children can often be seen safely playing in the park or on sidewalks and in the weekends, families often take to the beach to enjoy the warm waters surrounding the city.

It was a beautiful fall day, one that Emmy was determined to enjoy. It had seemed like for the last few months, she had been held up in her apartment, feeling sorry for her life. She had tried to find Alex's family, to let them know that she had been responsible for his death, but she hadn't been able to locate them. The longer she looked for them, the more she began to believe that they weren't actually here at all. Perhaps she wasn't meant to tell his family that she had been responsible for his death.

This week, she had taken a break from her search, having gotten discouraged that she hadn't been making any progress at all. So instead of looking for her deceased boyfriend's family, she had spent it trying to figure out how to control her unique gift â€" the same gift that had gotten her kicked out of her family.

You see, Emmy has the ability to control the weather. Where she grew up, supernatural beings were persecuted for what they were and her family all but abandoned her. But Alex had taken her in, showed her what it was like to be loved and cared for. He had even helped her start to make sense of her abilities. But it was her abilities that had caused his untimely death. It had been an accident. The tornado that tore through their home hadn't been created on purpose. Emmy couldn't control it and so she fell victim to it...she was at her own creation's mercy. If she had been able to control herself, perhaps she could have saved Alex.

But the past was the past and she was trying now to allow the same mistake to happen twice. So she practiced. Today, the afternoon was a quiet one and the park was relatively empty. She had been trying to summon storms only to bring back the sunshine. She was getting better, but she still was not perfect at it. But something caught her attention, the loud clashing of metal hitting pavement. It startled Emmy, causing a bolt of lightning to crash down near her body.

Once she was assured that nothing life threatening was happening, she felt her breathing return to normal. Eyes rested on the young woman who had taken a tumble. Quickly, she jogged over to the woman, offering her hand to ease her to her feet. "Are you alright?" She hoped it wasn't her practicing that had caused the girl's tumble. Already too much had happened due to her abilities. She couldn't take it any more.
