The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

I had never had a chance to face a major holiday on my own. Granted, most of my life had been shared with way too many other females and a variety of extended family that I sometimes couldn't remember the names of, even after all these years, but I had never had a chance to have my own space and my own autonomy. With the eyes of my elder siblings constantly on me and watching every little matter I was involved in, it had been incredibly difficult to break away from that mold and blossom into whatever form of adulthood was within reach. My apartment awaited me after the cold, filled with a stocked fireplace and kitchen and I couldn't have been happier, even if I felt displaced in the quiet. Though the thought of abandoning my Christmas shopping that was actually incredibly necessary to finish as my sisters were coming into town to spend Christmas with Davante, Finley and I loomed heavily in front of me as I opened the door of the shop I had been only to be greeted by a gust of icy air that sent a shiver straight up my spine as soon as I collided with it. I stifled the squeak of surprise with my scarf, attempting to burrow myself into it as far as I could before bounding across the street to what would hopefully be the final stop on my Christmas shopping adventure. Because that fireplace was calling my name. Of course, the jewelry shop was busy. I had perused the shop once before after wandering in absentmindedly only to find that they did repairs on antique pieces. I could have simply asked my brother to fix the ring, but what fun was that? Exploring the city was far more exciting than boredly watching him attempt to fix something that a jeweler would have more fun examining. With the call to retrieve said antique, I merely added it onto the "to-do" list I had started that was already far too long to be accomplished by Christmas. After unpinning the clip that had held my hair up, I smiled at the gentle compliment that I smelled like cake as I unbuttoned my coat. Though I had planned to look around for a moment or two before speaking to any of the employees, I was more or less broadsided by a tall, dark haired man who spoke with a familiarity that I couldn't help jumping, the action accompanied by a dear-in-the-headlights look in my bright, wide blue eyes. Hey babe, you made it! With a very, and I mean very, brief look to the woman who was standing nearest him it became evident that she was coming onto him in the way that many desperate women did when someone tall, dark, and handsome materialized nearby. From the look on his face, it is rather obvious he isn't amused with her advances. Poor guy, the way her eyes crawled over him like a cockroach on rotten food. I shuddered, but found myself shaking the surprise off of my expression to greet him with the same level of familiarity in order to exterminate the cockroach threat. As he turns his face to meet my gaze, raising his eyes, his voice softens in explanation that this is in fact a game, and he's no predator despite the sparkle in his eyes that tells me he's more than merely human. Instead of backing away which I may have done if he hadn't offered me the playful invite, I close the gap and slip a slender arm around his waist. Gingerly leaning against him as if this was more than a charade, I offer the woman a slow, charming smile. "Thanks for occupying him while he waited; poor thing had to wait for me for so long," I cooed, my accent as pacified as I could make it. "I'll leave your customer service tip with the register!" Was she even an employee? Thoughtfully, I shrugged inwardly and stepped away from the man who had tumbled into a rabbit hole while dealing with the ... lady, that had intercepted him. "I swear, they never do," I offered, returning his smirk with an amused smile that didn't quite meet my crystalline eyes. |
