The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

A new world hangs outside the window Beautiful and strange It must be I've fallen awake I must be A waitress in a revealing green kilt is taking beverage orders, but Buffy is too distracted. She's lost in the fog, all too aware of her fingers and toes and the goosebumps that pimple her arms, but that's about it. She's staring absently at a metallic-looking green shamrock, the paper-thin decoration bouncing lightly on its coiled stick, wavering gently as the air conditioning vent overhead drones on. Finally, the waitress makes the rounds and gets to her. "Something to drink?" She asks sweetly, but Buffy is still somewhere else, the chewed down nubs of her fingernails picking delicately at the edge of the "Gia" sticker she slapped over one boob. "Oh, I get it. It's St. Paddy's Day." She finally blurts out, intending for this brilliant realization to be heard by only herself. She's startled by the presence of the waitress now, who is looking at her a little funny. "Oh shit! Yeah, sorry. A Guinness sounds good." The room is starting to fill. Men huddle around the bar while women near (and not even close) to her age take their seats in a sea of empty tables. There's a sickening smell in the perfume and cologne in the air, the stench is strong and humid. Buffy wrinkles her nose at it and tries to make her mind focus on something else. The Guinness arrives and she clutches the drink between two hands, happy for the distraction. A wave of nausea overcomes her, the wavering sickness enough to make her swallow hard and cover her lips with one hand just in case. It's short-lived, but the dreaded feeling is all too familiar. It crawls out from the depths of her stomach every time she senses her prey is close by. And as the sickness passes, instinct kicks in. Buffy chugs down her beer, wiping the remaining residue from her face on the back of her hand and looks up just as the monster begins to speak. His presence here sends a chill down her and spine and suddenly, Buffy doesn't feel so stoned anymore. There's a stake in her breast pocket -- there always is, for times just like this -- but she doesn't reach for it. The vampire is sliding into the chair across from her, his name written in loopy, sloppy cursive handwriting just like hers. "I could say the same thing about you." She manages to say, and signals to the waitress passing by that she wanted another beer. "A fuck and drain-her-dry?" Buffy said, loud enough for the couple at the next table to look over with lingering eyes. "And Jesus, what kind of name is Sebastian anyway? Out of all the blood suckers in this town, I got paired up with the fucking lamest?" Buffy made a mental note to tell Leslie just how great this speed dating event went for her. You know, after she staked the dude sitting across from her and all. |
