East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart,
But the welcome I receive at the restart.

The invitation arrived on time, but Dareios had seemingly misplaced it, the thin but manicured envelope gathering dust somewhere among the files and papers of his grand mahogany desk. He had far too much work to do to waste even a second on opening some note from someone he clearly did not know for what he mused was some kind of wanting favor or empty gesture of community. But on the eve of the night's festivities, Dareios found himself eyeing it, the sharp corner of the card peering out from underneath the stack of spreadsheets and reports. Lazily, a slender, cold hand snatched it up. The vampire exhaled before leaning deeply into his chair, kicking up one slippered foot onto the surface of his desk and haphazardly weighing the decision to open it. His dark eyebrows furrowed, coming together almost in the small space above his eyes, before bringing it closer to his face. He smelled it, he inspected it, and finally he reached for the gold-plated letter opener on the desk and tore through the crisp paper.

This wasn't the first time this year he'd been invited to some sort of vampire gathering. The invitations were generic -- beckoning him to come to some kind of vague social gathering for networking or social purposes, but really it was a ruse. You see, this is usually what covens do when they're low on members. It's a way to get you there. Get you face-to-face where they can pester you for membership. It was hardly any different than political rallies and their attempts to bleed you for monetary contributions.

Dareios tossed the invitation back onto the desk and swiveled in his chair to face the window. He'd been a 'homebody' for as long as he could remember. His coven days were well behind him, as were the parties and vamp clubs that were usually associated with them. Hell, he barely fed on humans directly anymore. (Excluding his former business associate Ian, who was still chained and about half dead in the basement, but that's a different story.) Art Blakey's staccato beats rang out from the confines of his record player that hummed from in the corner. A bottle of red wine was open, the only human beverage he could stomach, and a half drunken glass was held in one hand. He usually didn't mind his quiet nights, of jazz and wine, but something about tonight was unsettling.

Maybe it was his recent run in with Sorcha in the westside at the were fighting rings. The rush of meeting someone new, or doing something unexpected was arousing of sort. A finger rises to his lip and he holds it there, eyes glazed as he stares at the stars beginning to twinkle from the falling dusk sky. He lingers a moment longer before finally standing.

Dareios emerges nearly an hour later, dressed in a finely fitted suit and his usual Italian leather loafers. Though this time, he's wearing a delicate black satin mask and wide brimmed dark hat. A swooping cape billows off his shoulders. The vampire version of Zorro he thought with a breathy chuckle. So he'd go. Just for one drink. Just to see if there were any familiar faces out there anymore. He listed off excuse after excuse the farther away he got from his brownstone in Anacosta Heights until he arrived at the bar.

He entered quickly, eyes adjusting to the dark environment with the brightly colored pumpkins and general store gimmicks strewn about. He pats at his crisp and clean blazer nervously, taking small steps as he passes through the crowd, working his way to the bar.
