East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

If I could make a Wish

If you play, you play for keeps

Oh it would be fun she said. You will be able to enjoy yourself more she said. You will see more lovely scenery she also said but out of everything that she told me she didn't tell me everything. She didn't tell me about the screaming kids, the nosey elderly, or that the whole time I would fear for my safety upon the rickety machine. My cousin meant well but really I should have known better. So to say that I was ecstatic to be off that monolithic death chamber would be the understatement of the year.

The driver did not have to tell me twice as I grabbed my carry on bag and speed walked to the nearest door. I almost fell to the filthy pavement and kissed it hello but I resisted such a silly urge...barely. Finally I was here, in the big city! Dropping my plain purple suitcase I twirled around, eyes large and wide so that I can take everything in. The moment almost out of a movie until the bus pulled off, shrouding me in a cloud of exhaust. There is nothing ethereal or sexy about being double over, coughs sounding suspiciously like I was trying to hack up a lung. Smoothing my little white dress with blue stripes I pulled my yellow scarf over my mouth and nose to try and filter that horrid poison before snatching my bag.

Hailing a cab to my hotel proved to be of little consequence. The driver was not inclined to conversation which was well. I was too busy pressed to the window to really care. The buildings were magnificent. I had traveled for work but I never truly ever had time to just be. This little time was more than I could ask for. After checking in I was right back out, the time indicating that it was a little after noon which meant time for lunch. Exchanging my carry on for a yellow purse I soon found myself walking the sidewalks, peering into each and every little café until I found a cute one near the corner. The décor was nice and the establishment was very clean. Sliding into a booth, I finger the menu, eyes scanning the miniscule list of items until the server reaches my table, her smile a beacon of warmth. "Hello there. How can I help you?" Her voice is bold and very bubbly, so much so that I could not help but smile in return.

"Hello. Can I have an iced caramel latte?"

She smiles as she nods before taking off to fill my order. I didn't typically indulge in caffeine but the day was very warm and I wanted to get as much in today as I could. Sleep could come later...much later for I haven't been on a Blighty for too long with my mother. Turning I began to study everyone around me, watching the way they interacted with each other and the soft hum of activity. What were their lives like? Did they suffer the same challenges as me? Would they like me if I were to say hello? My latte comes soon after and with a sip I watch, enthralled.

I Don't Believe In Magic BUT I Believe In YOU
