Anacosta Heights
Dupont Circle
Hawethorn Village
River Dale
Situated above the daily life of the city, Anacosta Heights is a tucked away suburb featuring extravagant neo-gothic inspired mansions. The inhabitants of this neighborhood often show their overwhelming wealth with sports cars lining their long, circular driveways, large pools, and manicured gardens. The homeowners of Anacosta Heights treasure their privacy as seen by the high iron gates to the security personnel present at every entrance.
Dupont Circle is a small suburban neighborhood settled within the serene portion of the southern portion of town. These four-bedroom, single-family homes feature back yards, porches, garages, and far more breathing space then the Village offers. This neighborhood often is more family orientated and even has organized events for children and the neighborhood as a whole.
Settled in the middle of downtown, Hawthorn Village consists of several victorian inspired row houses just off the main street. Due to it's convenience to just about everything, the village can be a tad expensive to live within. However, the residents of this neighborhood often have two to three-story townhouses, often with a one to two-car garage. Many of the houses feature bay windows and/or rooftop terraces with a small fenced-in 'yard'.
River Dale primarily consists of apartments that, despite their age and industrial appearing interior, still hold to the Victorian history that permeates the town. These apartments are often the cheapest option and sport scuffed, older wooden floors, open floor plans, visible beams, and the occasional brick wall.
Amelia was feeling faint. The news that she might be carrying a child was a hard pill to swallow. When she was a younger vampire, just turned, it had pained her to know that she would never carry a child...never be a mother. But she had been given hundreds of years to come to terms with what her new life would entail. And now? Now all of that was being brought into question. Was she really pregnant? How could that be?
The feelings had been far too overwhelming and she felt herself falling back, unable to stand. Thankfully, she felt Troy's strong arms wrap around her and steady her on her feet. She clung to him, her legs feeling weak in the knees. She asked how it was possible that she was carrying a child, hoping that maybe he had an answer for her. But his answer held just as much confusion as she had. "I've had hundreds of years to come to terms with the fact that I'll never be a mother...something I wanted since I was a child..." What she couldn't bring herself to say was that despite the uncertainty for how the child came to grow in her womb, it wasn't altogether a bad thing. This is what she had always wanted â€" she only hoped Troy wanted it too. The last thing she wanted was to watch Troy walk out of this house for good.
She immediately felt a little self-conscious. Now she was worried about what Troy would do with this news. She didn't want him to leave her...just when she was really getting serious with him. On top of all of that, she hoped he wasn't angry with her. She didn't know she could get pregnant. If she had, then she would have certainly taken the extra precautions to prevent pregnancy. Briefly, she wondered if it was something about his blood...or a new power she suddenly found herself in the possession of.
When his finger slowly brought her eyes to his, she rose her gaze hesitantly, finally allowing her eyes to rest on his. She listened to his words, nodding softly. She took heart in the fact that he hadn't already run out of the house as quickly as he could. "Dr. Williams â€" she's the doctor my donor's see for their checkups and lab tests." She slowly pulled away from Troy only to grab her cell phone sitting on the counter. Looking at the pot of soup, she turned it off. She wasn't hungry anymore...just feeling more ill.
A call was placed to Dr. Williams and the physician noted that she would come by in 15 minutes. The doctor was always good to Amelia, always coming out at her beck and call. When the doorbell finally sounded, Amelia opened the door and ushered in the African American young female physician. Amelia led her into the parlor where she had been waiting with Troy. "I need to examine you. Do you want him to step out?" Amelia shook her head at the doctor's question. "No, he's fine right where he is." She squeezed his hand and offered him a soft smile as Dr. Williams began to examine her.
By the time all was said and done, her vitals had been taken, blood work drawn, a pelvic examine done, and a thorough head to toe exam. "I'm going to need a urine test. I'll test your blood for the pregnancy hormone when I get back to the clinic. But a urine pregnancy test might tell us. I've never had to use a pregnancy test, either blood or urine, on a vampire. You're defying odds, Amelia." Amelia looked up at her sheepishly as she grabbed the cup and went into the bathroom.
After a few long minutes of trying to get herself to pee into the little cup, she was finally able to produce a sample. She handed it to Dr. Williams when she re-entered the parlor. Dr. Williams quickly inserted a home pregnancy test into the urine so it could begin to read the hormone level. "One final test that is pretty diagnostic. I'm going to do an ultrasound. I think, based on the size of your belly, if you are pregnant, you're pretty far along." Amelia nodded as she looked up at Troy. She laid herself on the couch, holding out her hand for Troy to take. She felt her heart begin to race with nervousness as Dr. Williams, exposed her belly.
As she started the ultrasound, she was kind enough to have the screen pointed to where they could see what was being scanned. It didn't take a rocket scientists to see that there was a baby in Amelia's uterus...against all odds. "You're indeed pregnant, Amelia. I'm not sure how it's possible. By the looks of it, you're baby is measuring about 25 weeks gestation." Amelia was in thought for a moment as she counted the number of weeks she and Troy had been together. There was a discrepancy. "I've only been with Troy for almost three months now...I shouldn't be more than 13 weeks pregnant. I've not been with anyone else in at least twenty five years..." She looked up at Troy, hoping that he wasn't getting upset with how quickly her pregnancy was progressing. "Well, it could be that your pregnancy is progressing much faster than a typical pregnancy. It seems to be growing at twice the rate. That could be why you're so hungry â€" you're baby is needing nourishment to grow." It certainly explained why she was so hungry lately. It was still shocking, though.
Eyes looked up at Troy, hoping that he was still going to stick around. She wouldn't blame him if it bailed. There was a part of her that wondered how he felt about fatherhood...knowing that soon he would be responsible for another life. She briefly wondered what the gender of the baby was, but was too afraid to ask. This was a lot of news to take in so quickly.
Dr. Williams began to clean the ultrasound machine and then looked to the urine pregnancy test. She smiled. "Well, it looks like traditional pregnancy tests will pick up your pregnancies should you have any further ones. I want you to start taking prenatal vitamins and I'm going to start you on progesterone to help keep the pregnancy if you intend on keeping it." Amelia nodded. "I could never abort a baby..." She wasn't sure what Troy's thoughts were on abortion, but she knew she couldn't. Dr. Williams simply nodded. "I'll see you in two weeks to do another scan to see how far you're progressing. Increase your blood intake for now." Amelia nodded and watched her leave.
When Dr. Williams was finally gone, Amelia looked up at Troy. She was scared and nervous and every emotion wrapped up into one. "So...how do you feel about all of this?" She hadn't stopped to ask him while Dr. Williams was here. Picking up the pregnancy test, she stared at those two little blue lines. She was going to have a baby...
