South

The southern part of the city has a chic family-oriented sort of charm to it. Here, small locally owned shops run rampant, neighbors often know each other by name, and the monthly socials are an event not to be missed. In the South, children can often be seen safely playing in the park or on sidewalks and in the weekends, families often take to the beach to enjoy the warm waters surrounding the city.

She claimed he didn't have to be professional with her because they were friends. But what she didn't realize, was that it was because they were friends that he needed to be professional. He was worried that if he let his guard down, he might slip up or something. Already he desired her, for reasons he wasn't sure he quite understood yet, and if he let his guard down at all, he might do or say something he would regret. But he said none of this to her, he only smiled.

He explained about how he would skate, surf, and bowl for fun, because that was really all his small town offered. She asked him if there were any other things he liked to do for fun. He looked up at her with a nervous smile. "I like to read books." He was a little embarrassed to say he enjoyed getting lost in the words of others. Most did not consider reading a very manly sort of thing to do. However, it was his way of traveling and seeing the world without actually leaving the comfort of his own home. He looked down at the surfboard, unsure of if she would understand his love of books. Something told him that she wouldn't understand anything about it at all.

When the wave began to come forward, he knew it was no time for small talk anymore. She needed to catch this wave. And so, he briefly explained to her what she would do and then gently pushed her forward. He watched her initial state of panic and then the determination when she sat up to try and stand. Unfortunately, it was too late and the wave tossed her into the water. As he said he would, he was right there to catch her.

Hand reached into the water to grab her arm, pulling her towards the surface as the other reached down to help. Once her head was above water, he pulled her towards him so she could have something to grab onto while she tried to regain her balance. The surf board bobbed gently on top of the water, still attached to the small Velcro band that he had attached to her ankle moments earlier.

What he wasn't expecting, however, was just how long she lingered against his chest and how her body seemed to involuntarily mold against his own. Her words offered him no encouragement. His cheeks turned bright red and he was quick to let go of her, taking a step back to distance himself from her. "I like you, Malia...I'm used to feeling that way about anyone." What he didn't tell her was that her romping around in a tight bikini certainly didn't help matters. But the root of his feelings was that he liked spending time with Malia. They were so different and yet, she made his heart skip a beat. He couldn't say he had ever felt that way about anyone before.
