She adored how understanding Alexander was being about everything she told him. He didn't judge her for what she did to her father's pack or for her hesitation in bearing children. He was truly the most patient man she'd ever met. She felt like an inconvenience to ask about his own childhood but it would be a lie to say she wasn't interested. He said that he didn't mind, telling her that his childhood was spent in some exotic-sounding places like Mieza and the Temple of the Nymphs. She leaned forward, enraptured by all these words and ideas, so foreign to her adventurous mindset. She couldn't help but smirk a little as she shook her head. "You speak of these places like they're dull but I find them anything but. How did the Temple get its name? Do you know the story behind it? You speak of your position. Were you raised to be a General? A king? How many siblings did you have? Did you have any rivals? Best friends?" She knew it was probably all coming out in a jumble and hoped he didn't mind elaborating. He said he didn't know what she wanted to know. She was just trying to help him along.
She knew she had disappointed him when she failed to reciprocate with her own stories, but she hoped to fix that. At least, he was quick to change the subject, mentioning dessert and offering her something from the menu. He assured her that she would enjoy it and she smiled wider, her eyes sparkling. "I'm sure I will." He seemed pleased to remind her of the drawings she used to do all the time. He said he looked forward to seeing them and she chewed her bottom lip nervously. She wasn't used to showing off something she'd done. The drawings were her musings, and probably more than half of them were of him or something that reminded her of him. How would he feel about that? She knew it was probably going to ruin the romance of the date but she felt like she owed him something so she decided on stories of how she met Frost and the kind of person he was, at least back then.
She could see the anger Alexander was trying so hard to hide and she knew it would be too much to ask for him to forget what she said or not act on it at all. He knew Frost. They were probably even friends and she didn't want to come between them but she felt Alexander had a right to know. When he reached for her hand, she only thought of his power for reading minds for a second, if that. Deciding tonight was a time to open up, she relaxed into his touch, not caring what he found in her thoughts. He seemed more interested in the story that led to the Ark, if that were even possible. It was like the pack she was now a part of meant something to him but maybe that would be a question for another day. Tonight had already been pretty intense. She finished her story about the time the waitress came with their desserts. She had to admit, it smelled divine.
He tried to show understanding and she appreciated it. She could tell he was trying to explain things from his time and how thoughts and ideas had changed since then. She nodded. "I get it. I fear the idea was pretty much still like that in my home pack. The women were the child bearers and the providers and the men were the hunters and the fighters." She let a heavy sigh fall from her lips as she leaned back in her chair. "What do I want to be? That's a great question. If only I knew the answer." She smiled wistfully before picking up her fork. "I want to be able to look back with no regrets from now on, not like the ones I will always have from those stories. I want to be able to take a stand, but don't get me wrong, I don't mind a little protecting every once in a while by the right guy." She added with a playful wink even as she stabbed a bite of the cake and brought it to her lips.
"Your strength and confidence is part of what drew me to you, after all. You were my knight in shining armor when I had lost all hope of rescue." She kept her gaze trained steadily on his own even as she put the piece of cake in her mouth, then she just melted into the chair behind her as she made a long "mmmm" noise. "And right now, you are even more my savior for introducing me to this amazing cake."
