She hated all the sudden tension between them and she knew she was to blame. She should have just let the subject drop when she saw that Alexander didn't want to talk about it. Call it a hint of stubbornness within her that made her keep fighting but now she knew that it was selfish of her to keep pushing. Alexander had been good to her. He was sweet and kind and giving. He could have judged her from the beginning when he knew what she was but he wasn't like that. He was a Dark Hunter and she was a Were but he never thought of her as an enemy or prey. She should give him more benefit of the doubt. He deserved that and more from her. When she touched his hand, he gave her a simper but it didn't reach his eyes. She knew then that she was losing him with this petty talk.
He said that he would talk to her and she shook her head. "No, you shouldn't, Alex. It might just make it worse. Please....let me do this." She tried to reach his gaze and hold it, wanting him to know that she was asking this of him. She didn't want to strain his relationship with Anastasia anymore than she already had. No, she would take care of this herself. As his focus shifted to the lamb, she, too, looked over her plate, grabbing her fork and knife to get a mouthful. She moaned as the meat hit her tongue. "This is amazing." She then asked Alexander about his siblings, listening as he told her about his brothers and sisters. She smiled, picturing a young Alexander. Was he mischeveous as a child or quiet and reserved? Did he get into fights or talk his way out of them? Did his siblings look up to him or were they jealous of him?
She wanted to know everything, but she knew it would take baby steps to get there. He stopped after just naming his siblings. She would have liked to know more but she didn't push. Then he asked about her and she shook her head, her gaze drifting back to her food as bad memories surfaced. "I was an only child. My mother died giving birth to me. Apparently, she wasn't even supposed to be able to have children so I was going to be their little miracle...at least until I took away the only person he could ever love." She could still picture her father's hateful face when he told her those very words so long ago.
