He chuckled as she tried to make sense of the skates, trying so hard to make them obey her every command. He warned her that it would take time, but that she would eventually get used to them. It should not have surprised him in the least that she wanted to know exactly how long it would take. He simply shrugged his shoulders. "That all depends on you." She could get used to them tonight...or she could never get used to them. It was all about how much energy she wanted to put into learning how to use them. For Ashton, it took him several skating parties as a young child before he was confident.
He told her that in order to succeed, she would need to relax her muscles and not be tense. If she was tense, she'd be pushing her legs apart in a way that would force the wheels to move away from where she wanted to go. Her question about how she was supposed to control her feet had him smiling. "Just relax your muscles and move with the movement. Try to stay upright, looking straight ahead. Just glide your feet one foot in front of you then the next." He knew she would get the movement eventually, it was just a matter of time. He had confidence in her.
It was only when she managed to glide her feet without wobbling that he decided she was ready for the next step: letting go of him. He released one hand, hoping that she might not noticed. Unfortunately, she had. But eventually, she was skating on her own without his help. She was doing beautifully. Now she was ready for the final step, getting out on the wood floor.
He told her that now that she had mastered the carpet, it was time to try the wood floor. He led her to the small doorway as he skated onto the floor before turning back to her. "Don't worry, you won't be killed on my watch." He had no intention of harming her in any way tonight. "If you need to use the wall as a safety net, do so." He smiled at her as he skated a few paces in front of her, still skating backwards so he could be at her side if she needed it.
